This scholarly work proposes that an integral feature of both film and television is the "mobilized virtual gaze." This virtual gaze "is not a direct perception but a received perception mediated through representation." Also, the virtual gaze is a standard part of postmodern society, along with a diminished capacity to retain the past. Drawing from a wide range of sources, Friedberg traces the development of the virtual gaze from Jeremy Bentham's proposed glass prison, the Paris arcades, the creation of department stores, architecture, tourism, and the shopping mall. If the disappearance of history is indeed a symptom of postmodernity, then the author feels that movies and especially videos have added significantly to this development. Her interesting thesis is well presented. Academic collections should consider.

About the Author

Hugh Barton is Emeritus Professor of planning, health and sustainability at the University of the West of England, and the author or editor of a series of innovative books including Sustainable Communities and Healthy Urban Planning (both 2000), Shaping Neighbourhoods (2010), and The Routledge Handbook of Planning for Health and Well-Being (2015). He is a recognized international expert, acting as special advisor to the World Health Organization Healthy Cities movement. A town planner by training, he has spent most of his career teaching planning, urban design and sustainable development at the University of the West of England, Bristol. His research and consultancy has focused on low carbon urban form, inclusive appraisal processes, and the integration of health and well-being into planning. Since ‘retirement’ in 2012 he has continued writing, and participating in academic and professional engagements, while devoting time to community activism, music-making, tennis and a growing number of grandchildren.

A very worthwhile read.

I purchased this book with some reservations because it was written some time ago and I was not familiar with the author. However, history books do not "age", inasmuch as the author matters more than when it was written. Sometimes new documents are uncovered which shed new light on a topic, but that is rare. The sharp mind of a competent historian is far more important.

Having read the book, I have to say that it has been a most enjoyable reading experience. The author's style and approach are models of clarity, and his analysis/conclusions are fascinating. The author is truly a master historian, I am grateful that the book is still available and very happy to have come across it.

It is said that those who do not know history are bound to repeat the mistakes of the past. This book really drives the point home, even though it covers events that occurred fifteen hundred years ago. A great read.

Clear and Intriguing

This transcription of lectures dates from 1927 yet it still shows up on Norman Cantor's "Core Bibliography in Medieval Studies" (Inventing the Middle Ages, p. 443). There is good reason to continue to include it among a list of works generally of much more recent vintage.
Lucid and engaging, Bury presents a convincing case for the idea that the Roman Empire in the West did not "fall" but rather transformed through assimilation of the various Germanic tribes. Bury's description of the extent to which the "barbarians" strove to work within the empire and co-existed with remnants of Roman society are of particular interest.
Good companions to this work are "Before France & Germany" (Geary) and "The World of Late Antiquity" (Peter Brown).
