The Secret Projects series is now well established with both aviation historians and modelers. American Secret Projects: Bombers, Attack and Anti-Submarine Aircraft 1945–1974 describes the important area of post–World War 2 bomber development in the United States. During the period to the 1970s, the U.S Air Force operated several classes of bomber—heavy long-range types for strategic operations, medium bombers, and fighter bombers for interdiction and ground support. The U.S. Navy had its own series of attack aircraft and bombers for delivering nuclear weapons, while the antisubmarine aircraft was another area to be examined in considerable depth. As a superpower, America was also able to look at some of the more unusual approaches in the creative process—for example, bombers propelled by nuclear propulsion. Many of the aircraft that entered service or flew only as prototypes resulted from design competitions involving many other proposals that for one reason or another, never left the drawing board.

Another entry in the secret projects franchise
By Jim Davis
This is another book in the highly entertaining and informative "Secret Projects" series from Midland. Someone at Midland, noting that books on WWII German projects seem to be consistent sellers, wondered if the projects of other countries might as well. Twelve volumes later the answer is a resounding "Yes!".
The subtitle "Bombers, Attack and Anti-Submarine Aircraft 1945 to 1974" describes the book perfectly. The book is well organized into chapters arranged by aircraft type and time periods. In common with other books in this series there are appendices summarizing the projects in numerical order by manufacturer and also specifications issued by the services. There is an index and bibliography.
It is distressing to read of the numerous times when project material was destroyed when a competition was lost or a company went out of business or was absorbed by another company. I suppose we can be grateful for what information we do have. For myself, the information on the Martin B-68 design was welcome.
Highly recommended. It will be interesting where these volumes will go from here.

Enjoyable
By JCAL
Not a whole lot here that was new. But there are new illustrations and the volume does put the concepts and airframes into a chronlogical order in each chapter bringing some insight into the timelines of DoD procurments.

Concise, well documented and superb
By Vahe Demirjian
When we think of American bombardment and attack planes of the Cold War era, we think of the B-36 Peacemaker, B-47 Stratojet, B-52 Stratofortress, A-1 Skyraider, A-3 Skywarrior, A-4 Skyhawk, F-111 Aardvark, and A-6 Intruder. True to its name, the B-36 Peacemaker helped prevent the Cold War from turning hot during its entire service life, while the A-3 Skywarrior served as the long-range strike plane upon which the Navy relied for its nuclear strike needs.
Tony Buttler provides a wealth of never-before-seen designs for US bomber and attack aircraft projects of the Cold War besides the early designs for those that made it into production. For each chapter, specification tables are provided for bomber projects that never made it past the drawing board. Although the B-70 early studies have been described elsewhere, Buttler also incorporates material from Robert Bradley's Convair Advanced Designs with respect to the Convair competitors to the A-3 Skywarrior and P6M Seamaster and the Convair nuclear-powered flying boat. The plethora of Air Force and Navy nuclear aircraft projects show that both the Air Force and Navy recognized the benefits of nuclear-powered aircraft in combat.
