Tales We Heard on the Silk Road: Plays, Puppet shows, and Readers' Theater for Children, by Nabeela M. Rehman

Here is an introduction to the rich literary heritage of three Sufi poets from the Islamic tradition: Attar, Rumi, and Saadi. Also included in this collection is a series of readers’ theater pieces from the fables of Kalilah and Dimnah. These stories represent a variety of philosophical dilemmas and ethical concerns for children, pared down into entertaining stories that they will understand and hold on to long after reading and watching them. What are the limits of knowledge? How much control do you have over your own destiny? What is the best way to help the poor? Can you learn to read in 30 days? What is the value of friendship? Stretching over 4,000 miles from Chang’an in China to Istanbul in Turkey, the Silk Road has facilitated the exchange of goods and stories — connecting people from many different faiths and backgrounds. Much like the fairytales of the Grimm Brothers, these Sufi folk tales and fables which have long passed down in Muslim lands are now adapted to the theater in the form of short plays, puppet shows, and readers’ theater. Young adults are now able to perform these moral tales for an audience of children. We hope that these plays will enable children and adults to understand the beautiful and complex cultural heritage of the Silk Road.

A Reference for a Children's Troupe, Theatre Department or Sunday School Teacher
By Amazon Customer
Tales we Heard on the Silk Road can serve as a quick reference for any children's troupe, theater department or Sunday School teacher who is seeking to incorporate multicultural tales infused with transcendental values into a stage production or existing curriculum. The book is composed of six short plays, two puppet shows and seven reader's theater pieces that draw their inspiration from ancient, poetic heavyweights like Farid Uddin Attar, Jalal Uddin Rumi and M. Saadi but are adapted into a format that would be best enjoyed by the modern elementary and/or middle school age child and accompanying family. If you are familiar with the timeless wisdom of Rumi or Saadi then you can appreciate the content of this book. As a teacher, I know that I could easily incorporate any of the readers' theater pieces into a language arts or even a Sunday school lesson.

The Making ot the Modern Gulf States: Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, by Rosemarie Said Zahlan

When Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait in August 1990, the Gulf states became the focus of frenzied international interest for the second time in a decade, the first having been during the Iraq-Iran war, 1980-8. Both events posed major threats to the regional state system which had evolved over almost two centuries. This book is based on a wide range of primary materials, including declassified documents used here for the first time. It defines and describes the geopolitical framework of the region and the state system which emanated from it. It explains how the Gulf states owe their creation and survival, sometimes against many odds, to forces well beyond the waters of the Gulf. Rosemarie Said Zahlan tells the story of the formation of the states, their evolution from colonial dependency to statehood, their socio-econo mic transformation by oil, and their stability in the midst of change. She illuminates their relationships with each other, with the wider Arab world, and with the major world powers. The result is an informed and balanced picture of the political, economic, religious and cultural character of the region. It is also a story of the powerful families and their shaikhs who have had to lead their countries so rapidly into the modern world, all the while preserving their own socio-political traditions.

Review
'an illuminating, concise, crisply written book' Middle East Business Weekly

About the Author
Dr Rosemarie Said Zahlan is a leading authority on the Gulf who has pioneered the development and understanding of the subject. She has written the first account of the Dubai Reform Movement (1970), the first comprehensive history of the United Arab Emirates, The Origins of the United Arab Emirates (1978) and the first history of Qatar, The Creation of Qatar (1969 and 1986), and a number of other works. Her forthcoming book, The Gulf States in the Twentieth Century: Isolation or Centre Stage?, will add considerably to our understanding of the history and politics of the Gulf States throughout the twentieth century.

A dry and uncritical introduction
By saskatoonguy
Zahlan covers the history of the Gulf states with special emphasis on the history of the various monarchical families. Sadly, her attitude is unflinchingly fawning; she seems afraid to say one negative thing about these countries and their economic and political challenges. As well, the writing style is very dry and wooden. Her bias is symbolized by one of the maps showing the UAE as extending westward all the way to Dawhat as Salwa, at the southwest base of Qatar. This reflects absurdly ambitious territorial claims of the UAE at a time when the Saudis have claimed the coast in the vicinity of Khawr Duwayhin, southeast of Qatar. This map is emblematic of the book's flaws. A much better book despite its age (1980) is 'Arabia, the Gulf, & the West' by J.B. Kelly.

The Best Introduction Available
By Abdel R. Takriti
This is the best introduction available on the Gulf states, examining such critical themes as the British imperial legacy and the relationship between state, economy, and social classes. It certainly offers a non-Orientalist treatment and avoids the condescending and often bigoted discourse adopted by such colonial-minded writers as J.B. Kelly. The late Said-Zahlan had a full mastery of the British archives and extensive knowledge of the region. This is reflected in this valuable and concise introductory work.

Easy and neutral
By A Customer
I purchased this book for a graduate course on the Arab gulf states. It was used as an introductory book to read. I enjoined it because it was an easy read. However I was a little bit frustrated because I felt the author was trying too hard to remain objective on certain subjects like colonialism and rentierism, etc. This seemed to cause the author to gloss over certain subjects. Where rather than being objective she could have provided a bit more detail from one angle to help understand the region.

American Secret Projects: Bombers, Attack and Anti-Submarine Aircraft 1945 to 1974, by Tony Buttler

The Secret Projects series is now well established with both aviation historians and modelers. American Secret Projects: Bombers, Attack and Anti-Submarine Aircraft 1945–1974 describes the important area of post–World War 2 bomber development in the United States. During the period to the 1970s, the U.S Air Force operated several classes of bomber—heavy long-range types for strategic operations, medium bombers, and fighter bombers for interdiction and ground support. The U.S. Navy had its own series of attack aircraft and bombers for delivering nuclear weapons, while the antisubmarine aircraft was another area to be examined in considerable depth. As a superpower, America was also able to look at some of the more unusual approaches in the creative process—for example, bombers propelled by nuclear propulsion. Many of the aircraft that entered service or flew only as prototypes resulted from design competitions involving many other proposals that for one reason or another, never left the drawing board.

Another entry in the secret projects franchise
By Jim Davis
This is another book in the highly entertaining and informative "Secret Projects" series from Midland. Someone at Midland, noting that books on WWII German projects seem to be consistent sellers, wondered if the projects of other countries might as well. Twelve volumes later the answer is a resounding "Yes!".

The subtitle "Bombers, Attack and Anti-Submarine Aircraft 1945 to 1974" describes the book perfectly. The book is well organized into chapters arranged by aircraft type and time periods. In common with other books in this series there are appendices summarizing the projects in numerical order by manufacturer and also specifications issued by the services. There is an index and bibliography.

It is distressing to read of the numerous times when project material was destroyed when a competition was lost or a company went out of business or was absorbed by another company. I suppose we can be grateful for what information we do have. For myself, the information on the Martin B-68 design was welcome.

Highly recommended. It will be interesting where these volumes will go from here.

Enjoyable

Not a whole lot here that was new. But there are new illustrations and the volume does put the concepts and airframes into a chronlogical order in each chapter bringing some insight into the timelines of DoD procurments.

Concise, well documented and superb
By Vahe Demirjian
When we think of American bombardment and attack planes of the Cold War era, we think of the B-36 Peacemaker, B-47 Stratojet, B-52 Stratofortress, A-1 Skyraider, A-3 Skywarrior, A-4 Skyhawk, F-111 Aardvark, and A-6 Intruder. True to its name, the B-36 Peacemaker helped prevent the Cold War from turning hot during its entire service life, while the A-3 Skywarrior served as the long-range strike plane upon which the Navy relied for its nuclear strike needs.

Tony Buttler provides a wealth of never-before-seen designs for US bomber and attack aircraft projects of the Cold War besides the early designs for those that made it into production. For each chapter, specification tables are provided for bomber projects that never made it past the drawing board. Although the B-70 early studies have been described elsewhere, Buttler also incorporates material from Robert Bradley's Convair Advanced Designs with respect to the Convair competitors to the A-3 Skywarrior and P6M Seamaster and the Convair nuclear-powered flying boat. The plethora of Air Force and Navy nuclear aircraft projects show that both the Air Force and Navy recognized the benefits of nuclear-powered aircraft in combat.

Private International Law in the English Courts, by Adrian Briggs

This book offers a restatement of European and English Private International Law as it applies in the English courts. The author has set out to create a contemporary approach to private international law which is distinguished from the traditional approach of describing private international law through its common law foundations. The author places European Regulations, and related statutory material, at the front and center of the book, reorganizing private international law according to the principles that the law is increasingly European and decreasingly insular. As such the work constitutes an approach to the area which is essential for litigators dealing with questions of private international law influenced by forty years of European legislation. The in-depth discussion will also be valuable to academics specializing in private international law. Written by an academic who is also a practicing barrister, this book seeks to highlight the techniques and principles which provide the hidden infrastructure and support mechanisms for the private international law rules of European law, as well as the remaining standing of the common law rules of private international law.

The book will be useful to practicing lawyers tackling issues of private international law as it now is, after forty years of European legislation, but the in-depth discussion will also be valuable to academic lawyers specializing in private international law. Written by an academic who is also a practicing barrister, this book seeks to highlight the techniques and principles which provide the hidden infrastructure and support mechanism for the private international law rules of European law, as well as (albeit second) for the common law rules of private international law.

Review

"Brigg's book is an important contribution to the continuing development of private international law in England and Wales, and to the general development of European private international law. Most significantly, Briggs offers the common lawyer an excellent introductory guide to the methodology and reasoning informing the European Regulations that constitute a still contestable body of EU private international law, one in which evolution should be understood to prevail over existentialism." -Jonathan Fitchen, University of Aberdeen, Edinburgh Law Review

Population Control: How Corporate Owners Are Killing Us, by Jim Marrs

From the food we eat, the water we drink to the air we breathe, everything these days seems capable of killing us. Recently we have seen an unprecedented number of deaths due to medications for diseases that may not even exist, obscure cancers caused by our modern devices, and brutal police tactics. All a coincidence? Think again. In Population Control, acclaimed journalist Jim Marrs lays out a stunning case for his most audacious conspiracy yet: the scheme concocted by a handful of global elites to reduce the world’s population to 500 million by whatever means necessary and make a profit from it.

Marrs, the bestselling author of Rule by Secrecy and The Trillion Dollar Conspiracy, pulls no punches in exposing this evil and chillingly effective plan. He explains how a small group of tremendously wealthy and powerful people control virtually every important industry – guns, oil, pharmaceuticals, food, and of course the media – and how it uses this vast network of conglomerates to take actions that lead to the deaths of men and women all over the world.

In the explosive Population Control, Marrs lays bare the damning truths corporate owners don’t want you to discover: how they’ve spied on private citizens, intentionally spread disease, and destroyed the planet chasing profits, all to improve the lives of a privileged few while eliminating everyone else. Finally, he offers a citizen’s blueprint for fighting back.

Strategic Planning is Not a Conspiracy Theory
By bunnyrabbit4
Jim Mars has always seen the big picture. I spend a lot of time looking at it as well because nothing makes sense at the micro level. Our water is poisoned with water destroying fracking, even in CA where a drought is endangering our food supply. Our food supply is being controlled by an FDA deputy director who was Monsanto's former policy director, ensuring that whatever biotech creates will be ushered into the food supply on the word of the manufacturer alone. Our staple crops of corn and soy were the first to go. Vaccines may sound great until you meet the mother of a vaccine injured child, one forced to go to a government court and face enormous opposition while footing all the legal bills and the cost of her son's disability.

People who speak out are silenced and ridiculed. Sometimes they die mysteriously. Science is bought and paid for. Studies avoid very obvious questions while aiming to prove a point that makes money for someone. That is not science....but scientist have to eat too.

I moved to my current home because it was one of the last places in Louisiana with clean water. It is beautiful with clear streams, abundant foliage and laws that require a permit just to cut a tree. But something called the Halliburton Loop Hole passed by congress to exempt fracking from the clean water act is now ready to attack our aquifer. There is no arguing that fracking poisons water. Our local oncologist went over every chemical (and they won't tell you everything) and told us the effects. The recent EPA study as damning as it was is a joke! The structure of our corporate government is not the pyramid we think but a host of three letter agencies each of which have the same agenda....and it is not to preserve our health and well being....Perhaps the worst part of it is what we do to ourselves...Read the Rolling Stone article about the babies dying in Utah..and what is being done to the woman midwife who pointed it out....It is time we start to love one another and stop chanting the party line....Thank you Jim!

Must Read -- Marrs at His Best!
By LJ
To be completely honest, books by Jim Marrs have always been hit or miss for me : some really good...some not that great. Population Control, however, is clearly a 5-star must-read book, Marrs at his very BEST. I would recommend this book to anyone who is concerned about the growing collusion between government and corporate interests. This book covers a lot of territory and Marrs gives plenty of documentation for those who are skeptical or just want to read the evidence for themselves. Although some call him a "conspiracy theorist", Marrs always cites his sources extensively, so you can check out everything he says for yourself.
I read Population Control and Battlefield America by John Whitehead back to back. The books are extremely frightening, but the information they provide is something every American needs. These are perilous times for the Republic, but hopefully books like Population Control will help awaken the masses to fight tyranny and the global elite.

Horrible OS book. Do not buy under any circumstances.
By Stephen C. Mattison
This is an absolutely horrible book. The book's teaching strategy is centered around many verbose OS simulation outputs. I would gather that ~50% of the books text is output from the CD's simulation package. I must also mention that the simulation package itself is exceedingly buggy and inaccurate.

I can not stress enough how bad this book is. If an instructor ever "requires" this book, DO NOT BUY IT. Buy a different operating system book, seriously.

I am a student of the author, and a skilled developer. Here's the skinny.
By Sage Gerard
I am an application developer of eight years with enough systems programming experience to be useful in a assistant sysadmin gig. I started early but enrolled in an undergrad program to pass the "no degree, no job" barrier keeping me in dead-end independent contract work.

Dr. Jose Garrido, one of the authors, is currently my professor for an OS course (Spring 2014) at Kennesaw State University. I had him for one other course before, so I am familiar with his pedagogy. Don't get me wrong from the 3-star rating, Dr. Garrido is a great guy that is easy to get along with, and I enjoy having him as a professor. There are reasons I enrolled in his classes more than once, so please note I am judging this book and this book alone by it's merit and usefulness to those looking for a good introduction and reference to operating systems.

Okay, I lied. I do have one comment on Garrido: English is not Garrido's first language. The resulting text is certainly readable with help from his editors, but the text has an almost robotic flow due to the simplistic sentence structure. Although this paragraph does not appear in the book, it illustrates Garrido's writing style: "This is a computer. It is used for various applications. A computer can have an operating system. There are many types of operating systems. It used to be that there were no operating systems at all."

One of the big reasons I docked the rating was the fact a good chunk of the book is basically an ad for Garrido's Java simulation library PsimJ3. I worked with PSimJ3 for a project, and the simulation models were poorly designed. We're talking a singleton class with nothing but static methods and fields managing a multithreaded application using other classes with copied/pasted code. This is by no means a stable platform on which to write course material.

PSimJ and robotic prose aside, the text has bizarrely-shaped state graphs that obscure rather than clarify, and a focus on simulation models and benchmarking techniques that is so strong that it comes in contention with the title of the book.

This is not to say you wouldn't learn something from the book. I would recommend this text if you wanted to get a taste of simulation models and a fundamental look at how performance metrics relate to an understanding of various operating system types. The only real drawback is that you may find yourself refactoring or even debugging provided code.

But to be brutally honest with you, you would learn much more from a conversation with Dr. Garrido than from his work (there are several publicly accessible papers and resources of his through Kennesaw State University's Computer Science department's website: cs.kennesaw.edu

Decent book
By Walter L. Williams
Required for a class. The principles are decently presented and I learned quite a bit from this book.

As with most college classes everything is rush - rush, so the simulations are WAY over the top and a waste of time as they are something that need to be picked through to understand.

OH! The index is completely worthless. Don't bother flipping to back of the book to look something up.

Area 51, Hangar 18, the Montauk facility, the Dulce Base, the undersea world of Sanya, HAARP in Alaska, Pine Gap, Fort Detrick, Rudloe Manor, and the Zhitkur underground realm - these are just a few of the select, highly classified installations about which the governments of the United States, Australia, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, and others prefer that we, the general public, remain steadfastly ignorant.

And these same governments have excellent reasons for wanting to keep us in the dark. It is at these secret facilities that for decades, clandestine research has reportedly been undertaken into crashed UFOs, deceased alien entities, bizarre creatures and unknown animals, lethal viruses, biological warfare, mind-control experimentation, and much, much more.

Whether situated deep under the ocean, far below the ground, or within the heart of remote, fortified desert locales, these and many other super-secret places are guarded with a near paranoid zeal by those in power who wish to keep their secrets buried and locked far away from prying eyes.

And they have succeeded.

Until now...

Redfern's KEEP OUT! May Only Entice More Readers to Want In
By Edward L Zimmerman
You can always count of Nick Redfern for some quality conspiracy literature. He's a recognized expert in areas of UFOs, Bigfoot, conspiracies, and other unsolved mysteries. His books have run the gamut from alien abduction to exposes on the infamous `Men in Black' to the search for elusive creatures hidden in various environments around the world. In his latest book, KEEP OUT! TOP SECRET PLACES GOVERNMENTS DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT, he serves up a virtual smorgasbord of `whose-its' and `what's-its' that makes the world of the paranormal so compelling for its readers.

Several of the locations explored here have been covered to greater explanation elsewhere - such as Nevada's ultimate secret base, Area 51 - and one could make the strong argument that many of them are ripe enough for an entire book instead of serving only as fodder for an individual chapter in KEEP OUT! But that's the nature of the book - provide the reader with a functional overview of significant details and then push on to the next mystery. These are summaries - as the book's subtitle clearly indicates - so don't look for exhaustive detail. However, if you want a concise snapshot of the public history for Area 51 or Wright-Patterson Air Force Base or even Royal Air Force Base at Bentwaters-Woodbridge, then you can find them covered here. Also, Redfern provides terrific context for the reader to capture the gist of the central mystery surrounding each of the secured locations, and that alone is the greatest service he offers with this release: here are the fine points, but, if you want to know more, you may need to go elsewhere. For those inclined, he provides ample citations in the bibliography.

What Redfern has done is created a `soft' reference book - a compendium of inter-related essays, really - that isn't so much, per se, about geographic places that world governments necessarily prohibit their citizens from visiting (indeed, one can get to the outskirts of many cited military installations but not inside the perimeter without prerequisite authorization) so much as it is demonstrably proof that there are significant places about the Earth - Area 51, England's possibly subterranean bases, underground bunkers, Hangar 18 - that governments openly and amply deny any association with. Some of the chapters, in fact, don't necessarily deal directly with any specific location so much as they highlight individuals associated to global or national conspiracies (i.e. the post-9/11 anthrax scare, Nazi mysteries of World War II, efforts to colonize the Moon, etc.); this is not to say that there aren't certain "places" exposed in those chapters but rather to clarify that these specific locations aren't necessarily the prime focus of those portions of the book. You say "tom-A-to", I say "tom-AH-to."

It's a brisk read told by a mind learned to the subject matter. Arguably, you won't find many minds better suited to the task at hand as laid out in the book's introduction. I've read several books on most matters explored here, and, while I would've hoped for something a bit meatier, KEEP OUT! still serves as an excellent primer for the subject matter as well as a healthy appetizer for my own search now that Redfern's pointed me in some new directions ... I had heard about the mysterious deaths of world-renowned microbiologists, so now I'm off to research the topic a bit more. It's good to know that Nick is already on the job!

Highly recommended.

In the interest of fairness, I'm happy to disclose that the kind folks at New Page Books provided me with a press copy for the purposes of completing this review.

Thought-provoking
By M. L Lamendola
Redfern always does a good job of separating fact from fiction, of asking rather than concluding, and stimulating the mind of the reader. Unlike most other "alternative explanation" writers, he doesn't specialize in a given area. So when you pick up one of his books, you don't know what you're going to read. But you do know it's going to be good.

One problem with "alternative explanation" writers is they usually are trying to persuade the reader of an alternative explanation based on scant evidence and thin logic. That's not Redfern's style. One of the hallmarks of a good writer other than an op-ed writer is you can't tell what the writer's opinion is. The writer's viewpoint isn't apparent in the text, and the reader reaches his/her own conclusions.

That is not to say Redfern never draws conclusions. If certain facts don't fit, he'll point this out. If a conclusion suggested by someone else (whether an official explanation or a conspiracy theory) doesn't fly, he'll explain why.

Redfern also digs up facts surrounding a particular issue, and he digs up a lot of facts. His bibliographies tend to be disproportionate to the body of the text, and this book is yet another example of that bibliography on steroids thing he does. For this size book, on these topics, I think a bibliography of 6 to 8 pages would be reasonable. The actual size? 23 pages. Some of these are dubious (e.g., New York Times), and others are more authoritative (e.g., [...]

The premise of this book is exactly what the title and subtitle suggest. The top secret places include Area 51, Hangar 18, HAARP, and Fort Detrick. Not making it on the list is the Men's Room on the top floor of the Treasury Department, but I guess we can let that one slide.

But it's not just USA installations he covers. There are crazy places in Australia, China, Russia, and the UK. He covers them all. He looks at places deep underground, places deep under the ocean, and places in between. He explores questions such as "Why is Pine Gap the only place in Australia you can't fly over?" And what, exactly, is on the dark side of the moon?

In the course of looking at these places, he raises questions and theories about extraterrestrial aliens, subterranean humanoids, and biological weapons. In doing this, he doesn't advocate crackpot theories. He presents the evidence or, if it doesn't stand up, points to false evidence upon which opinions have been built. And he gives alternative explanations the same treatment, in many cases explaining why a given theory just does not work. He may discuss multiple theories about a given oddity, or just go with one; that really depends on the oddity and how many theories are floated around about it.

The reader is left to speculate, which is fine with me. If he claimed to "know the real story" in each case, that would be a red flag to me. Instead of taking that approach, he takes an investigative, "Let's explore this and ask relevant questions" approach. He chooses to instill curiosity, rather than try to indoctrinate. And that makes a big difference in how enjoyable this book is.

A quote from Redfern sums up his philosophy: "Clearly, there is a degree of division between what we know as undeniable fact, what we think we know, and what many still consider the stuff of rumor, theory, hearsay, and unproved, outrageous conspiracy mongering."

People who normally chit chat about the weather or some other same-o same-o topic might do well to pick a chapter in this book and make that the basis for the next conversation. For example, what has been in Wright-Patterson Air Force base for the last half century or so, and why is it still classified as Top Secret? Not that you'll figure it out, but what are the possibilities?

This book consists of 235 interesting pages covering 15 topics in as many chapters, plus a 16th chapter "Conclusions."

What a great book!
By Brad Steiger
When a government agency tells an investigative reporter like Nick Redfern to "keep out," you can bet that order only makes him dig all the more to find out why people are supposed to stay away from those secret locations. How many high security facilities exist above ground, underground, and beneath the sea? Everyone knows that Area 51 exists--but what is really going on in that highly guarded base? Reverse engineering of alien spacecraft? And what about Dulce? Did our special ops fight aliens toe-to-toe to the death? Is there really a Hanger 18 with alien bodies from Roswell and other top-secret crashes? And Montauk! We've all heard totally wild tales about what went on there. Is there even a base on Montauk? Or are all those stories about missing children and Bigfoot like monsters just so much baloney? This is a fascinating book and only someone like Nick Redfern would have the persistence to track down the wacky tales and separate as much truth as possible from all the fiction and the spooky claims. Brad Steiger, coauthor of Real Aliens, Space Beings, and Creatures from Other Worlds.
