ALL of the "in a page" book series are great! This one is my favorite

I have tons of reference books that I've used to get through my Family Nurse Practitioner program, and the "in a page" series are the books that I use the most by far.

The in a page pretty much sums up each condition on about a page (some go over...) and seem to have all the pertinent information that I need for not only exam prep but also for reference in the clinic setting. The only other book that I use as much as the in a page series is the John Murtagh's General Practice. I use the murtagh's book when at home and for further information and tips and the in a page for a quick and dirty summary as needed.

I highly recommend all the in a page books!

a necessity for every healthcare provider

I found these books a year into my nurse-practitioner program, and really wish I would have known about them from the beginning. This would have saved SO MUCH TIME while preparing for seminar assignments and clinical sites! I have three of these in-a-page books, and use at least one of them every day I'm seeing patients.

About the Author
Master Zhongxian Wu has been teaching Qigong since 1988. He is the lineage holder of four different schools of Qigong and martial arts. He was Director of the Shaanxi Province Association for Somatic Science and the Shaanxi Association for the Research of Daoist Nourishing Life Practices, and has written five books and numerous articles on the philosophical and historical foundations of China's ancient life sciences. Informative Introduction to Chinese Astrology

Master Zhongxian Wu's book is actually a wonderful introduction to Chinese Astrology (although the title does not give an indication of this). If you have ever had an interest in Chinese Astrology, I recommend this guide. Many of the websites that I have visited give you a simplified overview of basic Chinese animal symbols. This book gives a brief history of Chinese wisdom and philosophy and is intended to give westerners information concerning some of the history of Chinese Wisdom of 12, an overview of ancient cultural beliefs and how their shamans determined the numerological meanings of 12, Chinese Astrology and the 12 animal symbols. Obviously, the subject is very complex and takes a great deal of time to master. This book is an introductory guide to the correct way to determine your Chinese Astrological symbols and how use the information to help improve your life. There is a great deal of information introduced in the opening chapters that I had to read several times. It is interesting reading (it is not a large book, but packed with a great deal of information in the various chapters). After the first chapters covering historical information and what some of the various symbols mean in relation to the universe and the cycle of nature (this is provided to help you understand how the 12 Animal symbols can help give you insight into your personality and how to make better choices to improve your life), Master Wu then presents an excellent section on how to find your correct animal symbols. Most information given in the US concerning Chinese Astrology is incorrect because they base the information on the Chinese Lunar calendar which starts on the Chinese New Year. That method generally mentions only one animal symbol, where in fact you actually have three. A yearly animal symbol (what the general method refers to), a monthly animal symbol and an hourly animal symbol. Depending on the date and time of your birth, all three may be completely different. The Chinese calendar is actually a lunisolar calendar. Master Wu provides several helpful animal symbol index tables for the yearly, monthly and hourly animal symbols. After looking up your signs, you can then read the corresponding chapter with information about the animal, differentiations for yearly, monthly and hourly aspects, along with overviews for personality, health, relationships, career, finance, color and food. If you enjoy meditation, there are sections provided for meditative prayers and photos of postures to use. This section is the heart of the book and the most helpful. It is designed to help you gain insight into yourself. It is not preachy or condescending and I enjoyed the sections on how ancient shamans learned to associate the Wisdom of 12 with the Cycles of Nature.

Very Interesting and In depth

I knew about the 12 Chinese Animals and the years, what I did not know is that we also have animals for the hour and day of our birth. Much like the traditional zodiac with sun and moon signs overcasting our main sign. Definitly an interesting read and from what I read of my own, very accurate! Surprisingly accurate for the day and time of birth and seperate scopes for all of your signs. Highly recommended to any astrology buff!

Good but short

This is a good intro book into the Chinese Zodiac. It goes into some history, explanations on how in depth this subject is, and you get an idea for how complex this science is. That's it's not all just pulled out of thin air. It does give a brief description of each zodiac sign. Personally, I was disappointed at how brief it is. It's a short book at only 192 pages. Each zodiac description is only 3-5 pages. I would have liked to see more depth and description. This book is good as an introduction - but then it really leaves you wanting more! I know other books that go into a LOT of description but doesn't have much of the backround and science behind it, so this book is worth reading.

Ho hum...

While I will not be as brutal as many of the reviewers here I, too, was disappointed with this book. All three stories lacked the charismatic heroes of her best works, and the heroines lacked spirit as well. They all fell in love in a matter of days, there was no emotional conflict as has been Palmer's hallmark and none of the steamy dialogue and sexual tension that has made me such a fan of many of her past works. I never thought I would have to force myself through a Diana Palmer book, but I did with this one. The best thing about this collection is that at least the heroes don't smoke like chimneys. It probably deserves fewer stars than I am giving, but as I devoted fan I cannot bring myself to do it. Suffice it to say, this one is going to the used bookstore, pronto.

It was very, very disappointing.

Over the years I have read all of Ms. Palmer's books. I am generally very pleased with her work and consider her to be a very entertaining author in the romance genre. But I must say that these three stories were bad. There was no develpment of either the main characters or their romances. It was like reading a non-romance book which lacked an intresting plot. The main characters were presented and without any tension or romance, the men decided that they were getting old or weary of life and that they should marry the heroine because after all she'll do. The only character who was vaguely intresting was Cy, a peripheral character that turned up in the first two stories (Guy and Luke). The third story, Christopher was the worset. I love stories about the Deverell's and the Lassiter detective agency, so a story about Tansy's youngest son sounded exciting. But I was soon disappointed. The story was poorly written and not well thought out. There are inconsistencies in family relationship and ages. Example, Tansy is in her early seventies, her son Chris is 33 years old and she had him at "about 40" years of age. Say she was 38 which would make her 71 at present. Near the end of the story Tansy says she meet Della's grandfather shortly after her first husband death (Chris's father) "about 40" years ago. If he died "about" forty years ago, Chris has to be at least "about forty" years old, not 33, not to mention she would be about 80, not in her early seventies. I know this is being a stickler and petty but that's my point, the story was so uninteresting that the age thing ended up being the only of interest. At one point, I kept checking the cover because I didn't believe Diana Palmer had written what I reading.

About the Author
Daniel M. Hausman is Herbert A. Simon Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is the author or editor of seven books, including Causal Asymmetries (1998), Essays on Philosophy and Economic Methodology (1992), The Separate and Inexact Science of Economics (1992), both editions of The Philosophy of Economics: An Anthology (1984, 1994), and the first edition of Economic Analysis and Moral Philosophy (Cambridge Surveys in Economic Literature, 1996, with Michael McPherson), all published by Cambridge University Press. Professor Hausman has worked on issues concerning ethics and economics, foundational questions concerning the nature of rationality, economic methodology, and causation. He is currently investigating questions concerning the relations between health, welfare, and preferences.

Michael McPherson, President of the Spencer Foundation in Chicago, Illinois, is past President of Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota, and served as Dean of Faculty and Professor of Economics at Williams College. He has been a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. Jointly with Daniel M. Hausman he founded and edited the Cambridge University Press journal Economics and Philosophy. Dr. McPherson is co-author of five books. His articles have appeared in the Journal for Economic Literature, American Economic Review, Philosophy and Public Affairs, and Ethics. He has served as a trustee at the College Board and the American Council for Education, and is a member of the National Academy of Education.

Short on argument...

I decided to use parts of this book for an undergraduate course that examines social issues from both a philosophical and economic perspective. For those teaching courses similar to mine, I'd suggest using this book only as a supplement. As a philosopher, I was particularly disappointed with the lack of rigorous argumentation in the book. The chapters tend to be structured as, "Economists typically do X. However, X involves takes many philosophical ideas Y for granted. Here is Y, and here are some alternatives to Y." Pedagogically, I would have liked to have seen deeper discussion as to the arguments for and against Y and its alternatives. Right now, the book requires its readers to do a lot of work to figure out: (a) why the differences between rival conceptions of welfare, liberty, equality, and justice really matter, and (b) the relative strengths and weaknesses of these rival conceptions. All this being said, this book might work better for economists trying to get their feet wet in social and political philosophy than for philosophers trying to do the opposite.

About the Author

Highly recommend for stressed folks

The afternoon my dear Mother died we had had a long chat and as we were saying goodbye after making plans to spend the next day together she said, "I want you to work on your Patience." I laughed in my former A-type way and told her I would Google the word, see what it meant, and buy a book about it. After the initial shock of sweet Mom's death was worn down by the business of death I was fortunate to find this wonderful work at Amazon. Mr. Lokos' writing has such a calm quality to it. I knew this was the right book for me when I read that he had been the sort of person who would lose his temper, then deeply regret it. This made him suffer. This sounded just like me so I bought this marvelous book. This is not just for developing Patience as it helps with stress as well. It has taught me to stop and think before retorting angrily. I have noticed three of my friends and loved ones under particular stress and have given them my copies. The two folks who actually read the book said it made a big difference. The other person was too impatient to even try to read it. I have bought the book four times now and keep it close by so that when I feel those old feelings returning I can take a refresher course. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Another fine book by the author of POCKET PEACE

Allan Lokos's previous book 'Pocket Peace' was so good that I bought
PATIENCE the first chance I had.

Previous reviewers have written many of the things that I was thinking
of mentioning. I will say that the book is very well written, direct
and clear in its message. (For a brief moment I was worried that I
would have to memorize the 10 Perfection Practices; the Noble
Eightfold Path; the 5 Basic Precepts; the 5 Marks of Skillful Speech;
the 4 Immeasurables; the 4 Noble Truths and the 3 Poisons. When I stopped reading it like a textbook, the book blossomed.)

The book's quote from Shantideva; "A single flash of anger can destroy all the
good deeds,the generosity,the kindness we have practied over thousands
of eons' was worth the price of the book alone. In addition; the book
helps you deal with/accept the daily noise assaults we encounter every
day. The book also includes a famous story from Native American tradition
on how to deal with the battles between being your best
or giving in to the worst aspects of selfishness.

The author includes a suggested reading list, which he
augments by mentioning why each particular book is worthwhile. I could go on mentioning the book's
many invaluable practices and quotes, but let me conclude by saying
that my copy of PATIENCE is so underlined, highlighting sentences and
quotes that I wanted quick access to, that the book looks like one of
those used text books you find in a college bookstore. Recommended.'

You WILL take it with you ~

Sometimes we read a book and then bend the corner of the page, underline a few lines, or share with our mate (or our FaceBook Friends) a passage that we feel is especially profound. Sure, you could do that with 'Patience' but I think it will have a bigger impact.

This is the book that's wisdom will sneak up on you while you're in your car, considering what nasty things you could yell to the driver who's holding up traffic. Suddenly, instead of feeling superior in all ways to this stranger, you might find yourself filled with a white glow of equanimity and consider your good fortune to be able to spend one more minute, taking a sip of your morning coffee and looking at the clouds passing above the pavement.

Guardians of history

The battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C.E. has usually been relegated by modern historians to being nothing more than a "symbolic gesture" of Greek resolve during the Persian war. Although it WAS that, it was also much, much more.
The importance of this present book is that it sets the matter straight. The sub-title of the work is in no way an exaggeration. The 300 Spartans + the allies who held the pass @ Thermopylae protected the Greek fleet at Artemesium and bought time for the armada to mobilize at Salamis. The importance of this cannot be over-stated.
In this treatise, Ernle Bradford takes us back to that long-ago period of world history. Much more than being simply an extrapolation of Book VII of Herodotus' HISTORIES, here is a study that offers a superb look at the weapons, armor, ships, tactics and logistical difficulties of both the Greeks and Persians. The attention Bradford pays to the minutest details of the classical historians allows him to reason out conclusions that may not have been evident upon a first-reading.
Beyond Thermopylae, Bradford also has brief discussions of both Salamis and Platea. The over-all thrust of the book, however, is to put into context just how pivotal Thermopylae actually was in reference to these other, more well known battles.
While the parallels that he draws between the Persian war and World War II are occasionally a bit strained, it must be remembered that it is a typical method employed by military historians to draw comparisons and contrasts between ancient conflicts and those of his own day. As Bradford fought in WWII himself, it is natural that he should use it as a frame-of-reference for how he perceives warfare throughout the ages.
This book is HIGHLY recommended as standard-reading for all War-colleges, persons interested in classical history and (most of all) those who have more than a passing-curiousity about the Spartans.
As your head hits the pillow tonight, remember that some 2,500 years ago 300 Spartans stood on a wall & fought to the last man in a battle that they knew they could not win. They left their beloved Sparta KNOWING that they would never see it again. They were aware that their life only had a few sunrises left in it, yet this did not slow their march to Thermopylae for even a moment. It is because of their sacrifice that you are where you are today; defenders of the pass. Guardians of history.

Inconsistent, but a quick and light read

Bradford's "Thermopylae" is actually a history of the second invasion of Greece by the Persian Empire. It is more the story of the Athenian fleet and the major Greek proponent of a combined sea and land strategy, Themistocles, than it is of the Spartan and Thespian hoplites who sacrificed themselves at the Hot Gates. The text is engaging, and I was surprised at hopw quickly I went through this book. However, I found myself bothered by several things. First, the author continually warns about drawing modern parallels with the way ancients thought, but constantly uses modern parallels (including the worn-out and inaccurate comparison of Sparta to Nazi Germany). Second, his sources are all secondary (including translations as secondary sources), so the auuthority of the book is questionable. Third, he is decidedly pro-Athenian despite the title of the book and continuous warnings about his major source's (Herodotus) biases. What all this leads to is a story of how Athens defeated the Persians. One might just get the feeling that the Spartans and Thermopylae were quite unnecessary to the Athenian victory. I'm not an expert on ancient Greece, but somehow I don't think that Leonidas and the 300 Spartans (and their Thespian allies) would have been memorialized and remembered for 2500 years if their sacrifice was irrelevant. Bottom line...read this if you want a good, quick read on the second Greco-Persian War. If you want a good read about Thermopylae alone, read the novel "Gates of Fire."

Good Overview of the Greco-Persian Conflict

I enjoyed this book as a good overview of the Greek & Persian conflict in the 5th Century BC. The text is easy to read, and the author provided some personal interjections that often (but not always) were thought-provoking. Bradford's more even-handed approach to the 'Great King' Xeres and his campaign (e.g., the meticulous preparation by the Persians) is a welcome change from the overly pro-Athenian historical record.
The title of this book is rather misleading as coverage of the actual battle of Thermopylae is only a small portion of the narrative (though it is oft referred to). The constant bickering of the Greek City States is highlighted (perhaps once too often), and the concise background setting to the battles is handled quite well.
After perusing this book, it will be abundantly clear why the underdog Greek Hoplite was able to defeat the numerically superior Persians (and their allies) in battle - outstanding leadership, logistics advantages, cunning tactics, and superior weaponry.

Can't wait to get creative!

I heard about this book from the Getting Loopy podcast, and I immediately ran here to Amazon to order my copy.

I love making afghans, and I've been looking for some ways to get creative (outside of the granny square box). I received my copy last night and eagerly went through every single motif and flagged probably 75% of them as "urgent to-dos."

Now a brief review: The book is beautiful for starters, the glossy look and feel of the cover is great, and then opening it up you're greeted with a spiral bound book that lays flat when opened! What a dream! The pictures of each motif are fantastic, up-close and personal, and the instructions and diagrams are easy to follow. The Afghan designs are beautiful too, I may start with one of those before branching out in my own mix-and-match adventures.

What I LOVE about this book:
1) With each motif Ellen includes several mix-and-match options of other motifs in the book that would couple well.
2) The extensive "encyclopedia" of knowledge at the beginning of this book is great. I'm still relatively new to crochet and really yarn arts in general, and even since last night, I've learned so much more about different crochet stitches, and even yarn types!
3) My absolute favorite part of this book is that at the beginning of each set of motifs, Ellen includes some layout ideas for the motifs of that shape. This is brilliant, especially for me (a complete novice at designing afghans) because I would have struggled to come up with interesting layouts on my own.

Just got it! It's not paperback! It has hard covers! And the inside is SPIRAL bound! Wonderful! It lays flat while you're using it! I'm just a beginner, so the drawings are valuable to me. I'm loving the whole variety/ mix and match theme. Only problem is chosing which to do first!

Great motif book with tips for crocheters who want to personalize their afghan projects

Go Crochet! Afghan Design Workbook is a really fun book. It is a great introduction to personalizing your own crocheted afghans and also features 50 different motifs and 10 projects.

The book is organized into three sections:

Ready...Set...Go Crochet!,
Motifs to Go, and
Afghans to Go.

There is also an appendix which provides information on yarn weights, hooks, and crochet terms which including comparisons between the US and UK terminology.

Ready...Set...Go Crochet! has a nice introduction to supplies including things like digital cameras and blocking boards which aren't on the standard list of tools included in most crochet books. It also reviews pattern abbreviations and international stitch symbols. There are a few pages explaining the stitches used in the book, complete with instructions and diagrams. This includes the basic stitches (sc, dc, etc.) as well as clusters, popcorns, and several types of decreases.

My favorite part here is the six pages devoted to "Creating Your Own Designs," where Ellen talks about pattern modification, color, layout, and assembly.

As someone who teaches a lot of beginners, I really enjoy the conversational tone Ellen uses as well as the information she shares. She anticipates a lot of the questions that beginners or those who are just becoming intermediates have about yarn, terms, etc.

Motifs to Go includes ten designs each in squares, rectangles, triangles, hexagons, and octagons. Each motif includes a small introduction about the pattern or colors by Ellen. The colors are vibrant and the pictures represent the blocks well. I particularly like that each motif includes five potential "Mix and Match" partners - especially since the partners are not always the same shape!

Before the patterns for the motifs of a particular shape, Ellen has a page which discusses - and illustrates - different potential layouts for blankets using that shape. This is one aspect of the book that I think really separates it from other similar books. For example, in Beyond the Square: Crochet Motifs: 144 Circles, Hexagons, Triangles, Squares, and Other Unexpected Shapes, you would find more motifs and equally great information about color and various techniques. However, if you were trying to piece together an afghan from the different shapes, you would suddenly be presented with watercolors, which might make it tough for you to visualize a final project if you are a relative beginner.

The final section has ten afghans using great color combos and different joining techniques to bring the patterns to life.

This isn't a book where all the motifs will end up the same size or are easy to combine together - the All Call pattern, which includes every motif in the book, looks like it was a struggle to bring together! If you are looking for a book like that, there are others on the market. I definitely recommend Go Crochet! Afghan Design Workbook to anyone looking for another crochet motif book to add to their collection, to crocheters who want to branch out from following patterns completely to modifying patterns to personalize their finished projects, and to anyone who enjoys crocheting afghans. In addition to all the content I've mentioned, the book is spiral-bound so you can lay it flat when working on a project, it includes a section on conversions from US to UK terms, there are both pattern abbreviations and stitch diagrams, and the motifs and blankets are beautifully photographed.
