Evolutionary Theory and Literary History

In the striking final chapter of this book, and further developed in several essays since, Franco Moretti proposes a theory of literary evolution inspired by Charles Darwin. As is well known, Darwin's theory of `natural selection' has two key components: first, it postulates that change is random, more prone to failure than to success, and not the unfolding of a teleological process progressing towards some final form of perfection (humans are not more perfect than the humanoids they evolved from); second, it postulates that only those changes which give the creature a reproductive advantage in a given set of external conditions survive (survival of the fittest means survival of the fastest reproducer). Adapting this to the needs of literary history, Moretti renders `natural selection' as follows: (1) aesthetic variation is the product of chance; and (2) the literary marketplace determines which formal variations survive. In later works, Moretti brings in `world-systems' theory to account for the peculiarities of the market, thus departing from his initial quite strict focus on Darwin, but nevertheless maintains the original evolutionary model conceived here. The other striking piece in this work is the essay on Dracula and Frankenstein -- Moretti argues quite brilliantly that these novels reflect two different perspectives on apital -- that of owners and that of employers.

The guidelines have evolved from a series of symposia on Ergonomic Guidelines and Problem Solving. Initially experts in each area selected were asked to write draft guidelines. These guidelines were circulated to participants at the symposia and to other experts for review before being comprehensively revised. In some instances these guidelines cannot be considered complete but it is important now to put some recommendations forward as guidelines. It is hoped that as new research emerges each guideline will be updated.

Each guideline has been divided into two parts. Part I contains the guidelines for the practitioner and Part II provides the scientific basis or the knowledge for the guide. Such separation of the applied and theoretical content was designed to facilitate rapid incorporation of the guide into practice.

The target audience for this book is the practitioner. The practitioner may be a manager, production system designer, shop supervisor, occupational health and safety professional, union representative, labor inspector or production engineer. For each of the guidelines, relevant practitioners are described.

About the Author
Anil Mital is Professor of Industrial Engineering and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Director of Industrial Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He is also the Founding Director of the Ergonomics and Engineering Controls Research Laboratory and former Director of Industrial Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He holds a B.E. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Allahabad University, India, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Kansas State University and Texas Tech University, respectively. He is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, International Journal of Industrial Engineering and author/coauthor/editor of nearly 400 technical publications including 20 books. His research interests are in the areas of Applied Ergonomics, Application of Systems Methodologies to Ergonomics, Metal Cutting, Economic Justification and traditional Industrial Engineering. Dr Mital is the Founder of the International Society (formerly Foundation) of Occupational Ergonomics and Safety and a Fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and Past Director of its Ergonomics Division.

In this book, Guillaume Faye, the firebrand of the French New Right, confronts the phenomenon of mass immigration head-on. Rather than talking about ‘immigration’, Faye insists that we must speak of a massive colonisation settlement of the West by peoples from the Global South. This, together with declining birthrates, means that Europeans will soon become a minority in Europe, and their ancient and unique heritage will disappear. He furthermore demonstrates that the Islamic world is carrying out a hostile takeover both of France and Europe, with ‘youth delinquency’ and terrorism being the first indicators of a coming ethnic civil war as Europe is overwhelmed through its porous borders. All of these facts are taboo for Europe’s leaders and ‘intellectuals’, who are working to organise Europe’s demise. This is a more serious threat than all the plagues and wars ever experienced by Europe. Likewise, Faye directs criticism at some of his former colleagues in the New Right for failing to grasp the reality of the situation. Colonisation refers to Muslims from the Middle East moving to Europe. He loosely compares Islamic colonisation in the 21st century to European colonisation in the 19th century. He doesn't like either, but thinks the new wave of colonisation is worse because it represents a more primitive culture as well as a high population growth.

The book is far too long and meandering for its own good. Unfortunately, more than 90% of the book is spent making the case of colonisation and there is very little discussion about possible solutions. I would have liked a bit more data about the colonisation. One gets the impression that the demographic shift is just around the corner. That was clearly not the case in 2000, and is not the case in 2016. Some demographic statistics would make the author's case stronger.

The book contains a short discussion of solutions. He discards the US melting pot solution as not suitable for France due to higher population density. He does not believe it is possible to assimilate immigrants because the political will is absent. I wish the author would have spent much more time thinking about solutions. He criticises Benoist for having suggested something like a bi-cultural France existing side by side (i.e. traditional French and Muslim French). Benoist proposal is a pragmatic solution to an existing problem. Faye's solution is very idealistic; repatriation following a massive economic and social crisis. I find this very crude and naive. What if there is no such crisis? Is repatriation any more realistic than assimilation? The author does not seem very interested in elaborating.

Despite being written in 2000, the book is relevant in 2016. It describes France, but the issues have recently become central in a number of European countries. We have to give the author credit for having pointed out a problem that have now reached centre stage in Europe. It is also striking that not much has changed in the mainstream political parties' response to the new challenges.

In a clear prose translation by Charles E. Butterworth, these treatises provide a valuable introduction to the teachings of Alfarabi and to the development of Islamic political philosophy. All of these texts are based on new Arabic editions. Two of the texts—Book of Religion and Harmonization of the Two Opinions of the Two Sages: Plato the Divine and Aristotle—appear in English for the first time. The translations of the other two works—Selected Aphorisms and chapter five of the Enumeration of the Sciences—differ markedly from those previously known to English-language readers.

About the Author
Thomas L. Pangle holds the Joe R. Long Chair in Democratic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. His many acclaimed publications include The Ennobling of Democracy: The Challenge of the Postmodern Age and Political Philosophy and the God of Abraham, both published by Johns Hopkins. He has also published a number of translations of Platonic dialogues, including The Laws of Plato and The Roots of Political Philosophy: Ten Forgotten Socratic Dialogues.

Charles E. Butterworth is Emeritus Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland. He is the author or translator of many books, including The Political Writings: "Selected Aphorisms" and Other Texts by Alfarabi, also from Cornell.

Small book, big claims

Alfarabi has a lot to say in this book. You can spend days analyzing brief passages, but getting to the core of what Farabi is saying is no easy task. Perhaps the greatest success of this book is just getting its reader to really think and putting him in a state of wonder.
