Listen to a short interview with McKenzie WarkHost: Chris Gondek | Producer: Heron & Crane

Ever get the feeling that life's a game with changing rules and no clear sides, one you are compelled to play yet cannot win? Welcome to gamespace. Gamespace is where and how we live today. It is everywhere and nowhere: the main chance, the best shot, the big leagues, the only game in town. In a world thus configured, McKenzie Wark contends, digital computer games are the emergent cultural form of the times. Where others argue obsessively over violence in games, Wark approaches them as a utopian version of the world in which we actually live. Playing against the machine on a game console, we enjoy the only truly level playing field--where we get ahead on our strengths or not at all.

Gamer Theory uncovers the significance of games in the gap between the near-perfection of actual games and the highly imperfect gamespace of everyday life in the rat race of free-market society. The book depicts a world becoming an inescapable series of less and less perfect games. This world gives rise to a new persona. In place of the subject or citizen stands the gamer. As all previous such personae had their breviaries and manuals, Gamer Theory seeks to offer guidance for thinking within this new character. Neither a strategy guide nor a cheat sheet for improving one's score or skills, the book is instead a primer in thinking about a world made over as a gamespace, recast as an imperfect copy of the game.

Review
One of the more astute media theorists currently at work, Wark is going for major bonus points with Gamer Theory, and he indeed racks them up. Gamer Theory opens a new level for media studies, offering a successor paradigm to the culture industry thesis..l and the spectacle society critique of the Situationists.-- Vince Carducci (Popmatters)

This is only a book about video games in the way that the story of Noah's Ark is about the weather.-- Laura Stokes (Brooklyn Rail)

Wark goes deep into many subtle mechanisms... Results are controversial as any Wark effort, but they are provocative and sometimes really inspiring, so often opening new possible paths for interpreting games and even different other digital environments.-- Alessandro Ludovico (Neural Magazine)

Not since Steal This Book has a book's radical packaging so threatened to upstage its radical content.-- Julian Dibbell (Village Voice)

Like all great works, Gamer Theory is formed out of a necessity 'to describe what being now is.' In a playful, edgy, and remixological style, Wark opens a new direction in game studies. (Mark Amerika, author of META/DATA: A Digital Poetics)

Gamer Theory is an amazing book, rich and pointed and powerful, and deserving of multiple rereadings. I cannot recommend Gamer Theory too highly. (Steven Shaviro)

In Gamer Theory, McKenzie Wark brings his relentlessly playful mind to the undeniably important medium of the videogame. Like a Mario of media studies, Wark powers up his own in-the-trenches videogaming experiences with secret combos from the big guns of critical theory to arrive at a player-centric and culturally savvy understanding of gaming. An idiosyncratic outflanking of current game studies, Gamer Theory takes scholarship of videogames to a brave new level. (Eric Zimmerman, Co-founder & CEO of Gamelab, and co-author with Katie Salen of Rules of Play and The Game Design Reader)

The release of media theorist McKenzie Wark's new book Gamer Theory is many things at once. If you're interested in the growth of a new medium, it's a media academic's major guide to the key issues. If you're games-savvy, you are just as likely to recoil in horror at Wark's analyses. To proclaim that he has simply expanded on his previous work, a hacker manifesto, ignores what gamer theory is--a study in the catastrophe of reading culture. It's an intensely difficult-to-navigate work but ultimately rewarding for those up to the challenge of the game before them. (Christian Mccrae Realtime)

Innovative, though-provoking. (J. A. Saklofske Choice 2007-11-01)

A crucial addition to a long history of discussion on gaming and play...This is philosophy constructed as and while the author plays the game (which also might include the academic game). This idea is actualised by Wark’s layered breakdown of Gamer Theory into meditations on various digital games like Vice City and SimEarth...It is a distinctive work in that it synthesises aspects from a range of critical discourses that might otherwise have no interest in gaming and play, largely because, as Wark writes: “Games are our contemporaries, the form in which the present can be felt and, in being felt, thought through.” (Terrence Maybury Media International Australia 2008-02-01)

Abstract, meandering, out of touch
By kyle karthauser
This book is light on both theory and gaming. There are plenty of references TO theory, and Wark has the nebulously elliptical "the-form-is-the-content" style down pretty pat, but being an avid gamer of 20+ years and a working background in English theory did not prepare me for this book. I'm not sure what would, really. It's not really worth anyone's time to go into the book in-depth, but here are the most puzzling/frustrating aspects of the book:

Wark speaks of a "military entertainment complex" behind the ever expanding reach of video gaming in mainstream culture. He either actually believes this, or uses this phrase in the casually aloof post-structuralist fashion of (I assume) his idols. While the US Army has put out a few games in the last decade, conflating the "military industrial complex" with the video game industry (and its concurrent effect on pop culture) is laziness bordering on absurdity.

Sentences such as: "If history is an endless list of things that should not have happened, boredom is what refuses not to happen," "What the game highlights is a logistics of targeting, an economy of order against time--the battle of alternating between merger with, and separation from, the other," and "The realm of the not-game is the domain in which the gamer cannot act as a gamer."

There are plenty of charts and "illustrations" Wark cobbles together to make his point clearer. These aren't to be missed.

If you're interested in theory and how it can appear to sound as though it applies to a topic, read this book. If you're interested in video games and/or constructive uses of theory, don't.

Ludic and Lucid
By S. Dowdle
I picked this book up through a series of highly fortunate events, and have not regretted in the least the purchase. I agree in part with another reviewer who said that you have to read the book at least twice to understand it: That is not a down side to the book at all.

Wark's understanding of what gaming can and should be is wonderfully expressed. The ideas are complex, accessible, and continuously thought-provoking. I shared excerpts and themes from it to my high school video game class, and though they didn't catch everything, they understood a lot. I wish there were more than just five stars I could give to this book.

It should be noted, however, that there is definitely a lot of theory in this book (which makes sense, given the title). It requires thought to go along with it--just like any good game.

Audience Economics: Media Institutions and the Audience Marketplace, by Philip M. Napoli

Focusing on the electronic media―television, radio, and the Internet―Audience Economics bridges a substantial gap in the literature by providing an integrated framework for understanding the various businesses involved in generating and selling audiences to advertisers. Philip M. Napoli presents original research in order to answer several key questions:

• How are audiences manufactured, valued, and sold?

• How do advertisers and media firms predict the behavior of audiences?

• How has the process of measuring audiences evolved over time?

• How and why do advertisers assign different values to segments of the media audience?

• How does audience economics shape media content?

Examining the relationship between the four principal actors in the audience marketplace―advertisers, media firms, consumers, and audience measurement firms―Napoli explains the ways in which they interact with and mutually depend on each other. He also analyzes recent developments, such as the introduction of local people meters by Nielsen Media Research and the establishment and evolution of audience measurement systems for the Internet. A valuable resource for academics, students, policymakers, and media professionals, Audience Economics keeps pace with the rapid changes in media and audience-measurement technologies in order to provide a thorough understanding of the unique dynamics of the audience marketplace today.

Review

The book sheds new lights on the operation and likely future of media in the twenty-first century.

(Educational Book Review)

Crisply written and aimed at nonspecialists...

(Harvard International Journal of Press/Politics)

Review

Audiences are the life's blood of media industries. Yet very little scholarship integrates the realities of the audience marketplace with economic theory. Napoli combines a masterful synthesis of the literature on audience behavior, measurement, and media economics with original analyses of the market for the 'audience product.' Rich in institutional detail, this volume sheds new light on the operation and likely future of media in the twenty-first century.

(James Webster, Northwestern University, Professor of Communication Studies, Senior Associate Dean of the School of Communication, author ofThe Mass Audience)

This is precisely the book I have been looking for! Audience Economics provides the kind of comprehensive but accessible coverage of the terrain of audience assessment that students will actually applaud. In addition, Napoli has provided us with a long overdue entry into a critical discussion about the nature and consequences of the shadow prices that are assigned to audience segments defined by age, race and class.

(Oscar H. Gandy, Jr.,, Herbert I. Schiller Term Professor, University of Pennsylvania, Annenberg School for Communication)

Great overview of audience economics
By M. Cecil
This is a serious book about how audiences are made and sold across a variety of media. It offers the serious reader a great framework for understanding how this vital part of our culture industry works. For media economists, there are a couple of inventive analyses that apply rational choice theory and audience theory to assess what factors influence assessments of risk (which influences content development and pricing). Even though the audience marketplace is changing fast in response to new media and measurement technologies, the book remains relevant. Well worth it if you want to develop a comprehensive understanding of audiences. Must read for media planners and strategists.

Great Read for Media Studies and Industry Professionals
By Sam Weber
This is a comprehensive must read for anyone interested in how media audiences are generated and sold to advertisers. Napoli efficiently sheds light on the evolution and current developments of an intricate audience measurement process that will make you think differently about the content you consume. Napoli also describes the profound consequences that arise by the way in which marketers value us along the lines of race, gender and class. Despite the rapid pace of developments in measurement technologies, this book still provides a relevant and compelling look at the audience marketplace.

The copy Amazon sent me was missing entire sections, including some important diagrams and figures. There was simply white space where the diagrams were supposed to be. I had to photocopy the pages off of a friend's book. How embarassing!

Why Spy?: Espionage in an Age of Uncertainty, by Frederick Hitz

What motivates someone to risk his or her life in the shadowy, often dangerous world of espionage? What are the needs and opportunities for spying amid the "war on terrorism"? And how can the United States recruit spies to inform its struggle with Islamic fundamentalists' acts of anti-Western jihad?

Drawing on over twenty-five years of experience, Frederick P. Hitz, a former inspector general of the Central Intelligence Agency, guides the reader through the byzantine structure of the U.S. intelligence community (which agency handles what?), traces the careers and pitfalls of such infamous spies as Robert Hanssen and Aldrich Ames, and explains how the United States must meet the challenges set forth in the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. He also describes the transformation of the CIA after the end of the cold war--from 1991 to the present--and outlines a vision for the future of U.S. spying in the twenty-first century.

A fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of international espionage and intelligence, Why Spy? is a must-read not only for fans of Tom Clancy and John le Carré, but for anyone concerned about the security of the United States in a post-cold war, post-9/11 world.

From Publishers Weekly
Hitz, a former CIA inspector general, writes an entertaining primer on espionage: why it worked against the U.S.S.R. but flopped against terrorists, and what America can do about it. He starts with a delicious account of the seven reasons people spy. Ideology and money lead the list, although experts maintain that no one ever turned traitor for purely ideological reasons. Simple revenge for being fired or denied promotion play a role, and Robert Hanssen (portrayed in the recent movie Breach) so desperately wanted to prove he could amount to something, he turned double agent. Despite plenty of fiascoes, Hitz argues that spying produced much valuable information during the Cold War but little afterwards, due to the difficulties of obtaining human intelligence from terrorist cells and secretive groups like al-Qaeda. The U.S. now depends on the intelligence services of countries like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, whose goals often contradict ours, and Hitz claims the Bush administration clearly prefers intelligence that supports its policies. His solutions include government support for studying languages, greater professionalism, relieving the political pressure on analysts, and streamlining the lugubrious bureaucracy. Although Hitz warns that reform will take a while, he delivers this news in a short, engaging book that gives readers plenty to think about.

“A useful primer on the new (and greater) challenges to intelligence collection and analysis so different from those of the Cold War. Hitz outlines why the classic motives for recruitment of spies have weakened---even as we become more dependent on good intelligence in coping with the threat of terrorism. As a onetime inspector general at the CIA, he presents his own view regarding the restraints he feels should be imposed on intelligence operations.”
--James R. Schlesinger, former Director of Central Intelligence and Secretary of Defense and of Energy

“Nice Americans do not like human espionage. In this book Frederick P. Hitz has done a great job of rationally explaining the not nice, morally ambiguous, ‘dirty’ business of espionage. This is a service to the country at a time when there has never been a greater need for secret, human-source intelligence--which can only be obtained with the full understanding and support of the American people.”
--Paul J. Redmond, former head of CIA Counterintelligence

A Lawyer with Intelligence
By Retired Reader
This book provides a remarkably informed discussion of intelligence operations at CIA. Its author Fredrick P. Hitz was Inspector General (IG) at CIA from 1990-1998, a position that would certainly give him a different view of the agency. Some years prior to that he was a legal counsel at CIA. In short, this book represents a lawyer's eye view of CIA and its role in the U.S. intelligence system.

First Hitz makes an important distinction between "intelligence", which he sees as the end product of CIA and "espionage" which he defines as gathering information from human sources (agents) by what he refers to as agent runners or handlers or, as CIA prefers, intelligence officers. He correctly sees intelligence products as the result of analysis and collation of pieces of information acquired through espionage, technical means, or open sources. Indeed unique among most writers on intelligence issues, Hitz offers that open source information contributes a whooping 95 per cent of most intelligence questions and that secret sources contribute only about 5 per cent. This is a startling claim, but most objective evidence appears to bear it out. (See particularly the books of Robert D. Steele). Yet Hitz also makes clear that secret intelligence is often the vital ingredient that makes an intelligent product truly useful to policy makers and warfighters.

Hitz covers a broad set of subjects in this book from his perceptions of why people will become spies (i.e. espionage agents) to questions of analytic tradecraft and CIA management. Rather interestingly, during his tenure as CIA IG he notes the precipitous decline CIA's ability to engage in espionage that was commented on by such former intelligence officers Robert Baer and the pseudonymous Ishmael Jones. Like them he attributes this to the culture of risk avoidance that plagues CIA to this day and to the loss of experienced intelligence officers. He also observes that the CIA Directors during his tenure were ineffective and often clueless. His views on post 9/11 intelligence developments and attempted reforms are both balanced and well thought out. He has some particularly cogent ideas about such things as the Patriot Act and domestic spying in any form. In his discussion of intelligence reform, Hitz tends to be cautious and avoids sweeping ideas on changing the U.S. Intelligence System. Finally, a warning to readers who tend to view any book on government through partisan spectacles, Hitz did not write this book as a critique of the administration of any president. The book is a discussion of how a lawyer who was on the inside views the processes of the U.S. Intelligence System. As such it is an indispensible guide to how the espionage portion of the intelligence system really works.

Some Good Info -- Bad Perspective -- The Author Is Part of the Problem, Not Part of the Solution
By David M. Dougherty
Reading this book I was reminded of the scene in A Bridge To Far where the Polish commander was staring at Boy Browning. When asked why he was staring, he replied, "I'm trying to figure out whether you're on our side or theirs" (or something to that effect.) That's my take on author Frederick Hitz.

Supposedly he spent six years as an "operations officer" (note he doesn't say "case officer", a position he calls "spy runner") from 1967 to 1973 and may have spent the entire time in Langley. The rest of his CIA time was definitely spent at Langley, from 1978 to 1982, first as legislative counsel (lawyer) to the DCI, and then as deputy chief of the Europe division in the directorate of operations, and from 1990 to 1998 as the Inspector General of the CIA. In between he spent time in the Departments of State, Defense and Energy, and obviously was an accomplished Washington bureaucrat.

Hitz's understanding of the motivations of spies was only partially correct, but at any rate the discourse over his "seven motivations for espionage" takes up 73 pages of his small (5x7") 196 page book and is only somewhat relevant to the remainder of the book. His other book, "The Great Game" was equally small, suggesting that the author has little to say while maximizing profit. Evidently he used a research assistant to pull together the information of the espionage cases he cites, a somewhat startling admission for someone who is a supposed "expert in espionage" and should have been able to discuss the cases from his active knowledge.

Author Hitz discusses the decline and fall of the CIA's competence which he believes started in the 1980s in Part Two. Frankly, I believe the decline set in much earlier following the Bay of Pigs, making the "good old days" not the 60s (or late 60s) as the author says, but the 50s. I say this to point out that the author probably never experienced espionage activities conducted without substantial bureaucratic interference, poor tradecraft, and arbitrary requirements and management decisions.

In his Part Two discussion he makes many errors such as calling Pearl Harbor a comparable intelligence surprise to 9-11. Obviously he did not research the Pearl Harbor situation to exhaustion but rather relied on Judge Posner's opinion. In addition he states, "It is difficult to escape the conclusion that the IC (Intelligence Community), and particularly the CIA, were unfairly made the sacrificial lambs for much of the inadequacies of the US Government in preventing 9/11." My response in the margin was to write, "Poor Babies!" Perhaps the guilty party who didn't receive 50 billion a year (now 80) for his existence was some poor rancher raising beef cattle in the Midwest.

Hitz recounts his shock in returning to Langley in 1990 and finding a Department of Agriculture-like bureaucracy fully intrenched at the CIA instead of the nimble, mission-dedicated organization he had convinced himself was present in 1967. His discovery was correct, but he doesn't tell the reader how or why the Agency morphed into a useless bureaucracy. Perhaps he doesn't really know. He blames this on bureaucratic overlay and risk aversion within the Agency. Duh! That is the nature of bureaucracies. But why did the bureaucracy grow unchecked, and why did the avoidance of risk (flaps) become the daily mantra? Here Hitz shows that he was part of the problem.

He states; "... increased accountability to Congress and the executive led to the introduction of more process, and more consultation with the agency's lawyers (like him)... In my judgment, this was all to the good if the kibitzing was proactive and designed to make the operation more effective as well as legal." Amazing! More legal? Only a lawyer could have said that. Espionage operations are NEVER legal! Outsiders essentially NEVER contribute anything worthwhile to an operation -- by the very nature of oversight an operation is burdened with more process, paperwork and more individuals to satisfy. Here, Hitz is clearly part of the problem along with the rest of the elite, liberal Ivy Leaguers (like Hitz) and lawyers so loved by Agency recruiters.

On page 121, Hitz solidified his argument; "Increased congressional and executive branch oversight of the spies has made for better and more confident espionage rather than the other way around." Yep, and I suppose Rumsfeld's micro-managing of the Department of Defence or Bobby Kennedy's micro managing of the CIA really improved operations. More oversight means more risk aversion and more layers of supervision (e.g. more bureaucracy.) Somehow Hitz misses the point entirely.

Part Three discusses spying in the 21st century, and here Hitz continually stresses abiding by the law. He simply can't come to grips with the idea that spying is a dirty business conducted outside the law. Again he stresses the need for more oversight, then goes on to recommend the elimination of secret prisons (like we had in World War II), and that US spy agencies should NEVER violate US or INTERNATIONAL law.

Throughout the book Hitz talks about CIA spy runners operating under diplomatic cover (e.g. in consulates and embassies), but in Chapter 13 he suddenly makes a plea for more case officers operating under non-official cover (NOC). These individuals must be very self-reliant, non-family oriented, and ready risk-takers, exactly the qualities a bureaucracy attempts to eliminate. Ergo, these individuals are doomed in a bureaucracy like Hitz's CIA. So the author wants his cake and eat it too. Hitz also states that "It has always shocked my conscience that ... the (CIA) did not learn its lesson..." Really? The word "conscience" is truly out of place here in a discussion of intelligence operations.

In the conclusion in Part Four Hitz stresses the need for language competent, highly trained and motivated case officers in the Agency. Foreign language competence are the top nine qualities needed in a case officer; motivation, self-reliance, risk-taking ability and home office political abilities being the others. With language competence comes cultural understanding, and cultural understanding does not come without language competence.

More than 50% of the CIA's personnel are recruits since 9/11, and one can only imagine the confusion this causes in a hidebound bureaucracy. That empires are building goes without saying, particularly now that most espionage is now being conducted by outside and independent contractors. Hitz whines that lawyers are not to blame and are valuable for the sensitivity they bring to issues of process and propriety. What about issues of getting the job done? Again, stare at him hard. And now he doesn't want the Agency to move until it has figured out what to do with its new recruits (page 185).

Some Americans DO know a lot about spying, contrary to the author's assertion, and there are solutions to our intelligence debacle. Unfortunately, the author doesn't know any of them. The first step in solving a problem it to acknowledge there is one. Hitz intuitively grasps there is one, but fails to recognize that he is it. Like Pogo, he needs to know, "We have met the enemy and he are us."

The author writes fairly well (after all he is well-educated Ivy League lawyer), but uses a chatty, condescending style. The author's recommendations are 100% targetted towards improving intelligence gathering against Islamic terrorists, and stresses the need for Arabic linguists. This is myopic and totally misses the 500 pound gorilla in the living room called China that is rapidly gaining economic control of our country through its purchase of US government debt. He also apparently doesn't know that the largest Islamic country (Indonesia) doesn't speak Arabic, nor do Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, and others.

I do not recommend this book. If the reader wants better information, read "The Human Factor" by Ishmael Jones, or any of Robert Steele's fine books. Steele also includes a number of excellent references for further study in his reviews.

Better than nothing
By Amazon Customer
As a beginning pianist, with only a year's experience, I found this book a mixed bag.

My favorite song in it is, "Cast Your Fate to the Wind". That song has been simplified to such a degree, that it seems calculated to disappoint beginning and intermediate pianists alike.

The first half can be doctored up a bit to sound a little fuller, such as augmenting the beat on the left hand. The second half of the piece sounds absolutely nothing like the popular song, and you may well wonder if it truly belongs.

As it happens, I purchased more complex sheet music of the same song, and there it is, more or less like this one, so I can only guess, that this is the actual composition, and for his popular release, Guaraldi simply tossed it in favor of something that actually fit. Too bad we don't get that here.

The version of Linus and Lucy is okay, but not as good in my opinion as the version in, "A Charlie Brown Christmas" an easy piano book by the same company, who's arrangement is credited entirely with Guaraldi. I might add, the latter not only sounds better, but is slightly easier to learn!

So the bottom line is that this book will make you work awfully hard to NOT sound much like Guaraldi, although that is probably a reasonable expectation with this music.

This isn't exactly the trio's work note for note, it's simplified quite a bit, and the keys are changed, but still it's still fairly true to form, and definitely fun stuff.

Mentoring is investing in PEOPLE
By Bassocantor
I honestly thought this book would provide some practical tips on teaching others. It certainly does that, but much more. This book is not some list of quick tips on how to be a better teacher. Instead, it's a plea to pour out your life for the benefit of OTHERS. My whole notion of a "mentor" was totally changed after reading this book.

Dr Davis suggests that the job of a true mentor is to invest in people. Mentors are "not to produce great men and women, but rather to energize ordinary men and women to be greatly motivated for the cause of Jesus Christ."

To cite just one example of practical advice found here: Ron advises the prospective mentor to become an AFFIRMER, as opposed to a strict EVALUATOR. We need to build-up those we counsel, rather than tear them down. Mentoring is investing in people.

I especially appreciated the touching examples of the author's father and brother--both who lived the lives of meaningful mentors to those in their paths.

To those who think that mentoring might be a real ego booster, Ron has some startling news: The Godly mentor doesn't seek his or her own glory. Quite the opposite, in fact. Mentoring, the Biblical way, is a "thankless, unattractive, unpretentious calling."

I highly recommend this serious and thought-provoking work by Dr. Ron Lee Davis.

Death , by Calcium (New, First Edition), by Thomas E., MD, JD Levy

In this book, Death by Calcium, board-certified cardiologist, Thomas E. Levy, offers scientific proof that the regular intake of dairy and calcium supplementation promotes all known chronic degenerative diseases and significantly shortens life. Written for both the layperson and scientist, Dr. Levy explains the dangers inherent in supplementing with calcium. "It is now clear that excess dietary calcium, as is realized with the routine ingestion of milk and other calcium-laden dairy foods, is also a toxic and potentially life-shortening practice."

A Paradigm Busting and Helpful Book
By Wayne Lusvardi
Science, including medical science, can only view the physical world through the lens of paradigms (models) because physical reality is so rich and complex. Dr. Thomas Levy has written a paradigm buster book that challenges the osteoporosis-calcium paradigm and the arterosclerosis-cholesterol paradigm. His alternative anti-oxidant/magnesium paradigm has a lot to say for itself.

I respectfully disagree with the first review of this book. The book is not meant to be a shocker or merely a pop book. It is a readable, soundly researched book with many helpful suggestions for those with osteoporosis, arteriosclerosis, and other chronic degenerative diseases and conditions.

I emailed Dr. Levy and asked if he could resolve an inconsistency in the medical literature between those who say that cancer is caused by oxygen deprivation (the Otto Warburg thesis) whereby metabolism switches from oxygen to sugar in contrast with his anti-oxidant thesis. Dr. Levy gave his permission to quote him as follows:

"When the cancer metabolism changes more to sugar, there is always increased oxidative stress inside the cells, and this is always accompanied (caused??) by increased intracellular calcium. Increased antioxidant capacity will always be an effective counter to this, depending on the degree to which it can be increased. Multiple changes occur inside a malignant cell, and it is not clear whether Warburg's observations cause malignancy, result from malignancy, or some combination of the two."

I also asked Dr. Levy about statin drugs (atovastatin calcium). Here was his reply:

"While statins have many undesirable long-term effects, they do appear to have some anti-inflammatory effects, which by themselves are generally desirable for most individuals. The calcium that comes with the atorvastatin will not be a significant counter to this, acutely, but any form of additional calcium intake will have a negative impact on health in the long run. Remember that the lower your cholesterol goes, the greater your chances of cancer--this is very well-established. Any co-administration of calcium over a long period of time will only aggravate this potential."

Especially for women who take calcium supplements to combat bone loss, Dr. Levy points out a different cause of osteoporosis: scurvy or severe vitamin C deficiency. Nonetheless, calcium is potentially dangerously added to many food products (without the balancing effect of magnesium). The result could be calcium overload and the degenerative conditions that result from it.

This is not merely a technical book for medical practitioners. It is should be read by a wide audience. After reading this book it becomes clear that people over 20 years of age should taper down or eliminate as much as possible the consumption of dairy products (e.g., the ice-blended mocha drinks from their local coffee house). I wholly recommend this book for those where heart and arterial disease, cancer, osteoporosis, and dental disease runs in the family. Thank you Dr. Levy for writing this book.

a downside to an over-prescribed supplement
By michael Godfrey
Dr. Thomas Levy’s latest hard-hitting book “Death by Calcium” will never be a best-seller in New Zealand and Fontera* could even go so far as to block any major retail book chain from having copies on their shelves. This book is a masterful disclosure of fully referenced scientific facts exposing the hitherto hidden dangers of excessive dietary and supplementary calcium. Whilst many (even including some doctors) now understand that calcium cannot get into or stay in bone without other minerals such as magnesium and boron, little is known about what actually happens with the all-too-frequent increased calcium levels following standard health department and medical recommendations. Levy does not mince words and this book is a shocker exposing as it does widespread multi-system adverse health effects when a body is chronically overloaded with unusable calcium. Every health professional should read it as standard health and dietary recommendations are causing widespread health problems.

Heart Attack, Stroke, Cancer, Bone Fracture Proof: Must Read for a long life without diseases: Find ultimate health
By Janet L. Thome
I want to share what I wrote on my blog regarding Dr. Levy and this book. This book is about much more than just calcium, it is for ultimate health. Dr. Levy also provides the science behind his new revelations regarding calcium.

Dr. Levy is blowing the whistle on excess calcium from dairy and supplementation in his book Death By Calcium. Dr. Levy is a cardiologist and the world's leading Vitamin C expert. Dr Levy states that calcium is essential to our health, but outside of the bones, we only need a small amount. Dr. Levy warns that if we get beyond the small amount neeeded, excess calcium starts to deposit in our tissues and in our cells and this is how cells become malignant. Excess calcium has toxic effects and shortens the lifespan. Calcium has long been regarded as something that is good for us without qualification and in the last five years new studies have proven it is not as good for us as we have been led to believe.

But I Love My Milk !!!

We have been taught all our lives to drink milk and we associate it with great health. We have been duped AGAIN. Why? Always for the same reason, follow the money. Dr. Levy advises to enjoy a little cheese, yogurt and sour cream sparingly.

Dr. Levy does feel there are health benefits from drinking milk that has no antibiotics or hormones and has been minimally changed but not to drink as a regular beverage. Dr. Levy advises NOT to supplement with calcium.

Shocking Facts From Death By Calcium

Regular intake of dairy and calcium supplementation promotes all known chronic degenerative diseases
Excess calcium promotes heart disease
30% More likely to have a heart attack and 20% for a stroke if you take an extra 500 mg calcium a day
1/3 of Americans over 45 have arterial calcification
Osteoporosis is a lack of calcium in the bones: it does not mean there is a lack of calcium in the body or diet: Osteoporosis is a focal scurvy of the bones
Excess calcium is a killer: it increases all-cause mortality by 250 percent.
Virtually all osteoporosis patients have a magnesium deficiency
Excess calcium can program cells toward death
Excess calcium increases oxidative stress and promotes the spread of cancer
Supplements recommended by Dr. Levy in Death By Calcium

Vit C : Lowers All-cause mortality
Magnesium: Nature's Calcium Blocker : Dissolves calcium deposits
VitD3 : Vit D deficiency is a cause of osteoporosis
Vit K: Inhibits and reverses abnormal calcification
Thyroid , Heart Health and ALL-Cause Mortality

Dr. Levy states in Death By Calcium that the treatment of subclinical hypothyroidism has been shown to lesson the chance of heart disease as Dr. Broda Barnes proved decades ago. Thyroid hormone has an important role in the health of the bone. It is required for the proper intitial skeletal development and the establishement of peak bone mass. In both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, there is a risk of bone fracture.

Dr. Levy confirms in Death By Calcium that the traditional lab testing for thyroid function falls short in defining the normal range. It is imperative to seek out an Integrative doctor that will listen to you and go by your symptoms and is an expert on the thyroid, it will add decades to your life.

Root-Canal Treated Teeth: A Final Appeal

Dr. Levy states that roughly 14 million root canal procedures are performed every year and should never be done on anyone, EVER. Heart attacks and cancers begin their development after this procedure. I was told I needed a root canal 20 years ago, sought another opinion and thank God, I did not need or get one. Dr. Levy covers how root canals can poison and kill , the problem with dental implants, the toxicity of amalgam dental fillings and gum disease.

Heart Attack Proof

Death by Calcium is a book that everyone should read if your are concerned as I am about protecting yourself from a heart attack or stroke, bone fractures, cancer and more. Dr. Levy covers the hormone connection to our bones and dispels some much needed myths to Testosterone therapy. Death By Calcium was 10 years in the making and he leaves nothing out for those of us seeking great health as we age.
