The book is great, but opt for the movie!

This is the short story version of the musical play and the movie. It's the original form of the story. Well-written, touching, provacative, interesting and fun. I love the movie version (with Olivia de Haviland, Rosano Brazzi, George Hamilton and Yvette Mimieux) which is almost word for word like the short story but with the added benefit of being shot on locaton in gorgeous Italy! Also loved the soundtrack.Opt for the movie version or try both!.

Cleverly brief

This is a clever novella, with a clever title, that is the right length for what it has to say. There is exactly the correct amount of descriptive language, characterization and story-line to make for a very enjoyable read. The bit of humor, namely the confusion about age, is unexpected and delightful.

How nice for the author to have this novella find its way onto Broadway quite some time after it was written.

Magical wilderness adventure

This book was the basis of the Disney film "Nikki, Wild Dog of the North" released in 1960. It's the story of a malemute puppy and a black bear cub growing up in the northern Canadian wilderness. I read this book before the movie was relased and was about twelve years old at the time. It was a magical adventure which takes you into the world of Canadian wilderness. This book, along with other Curwood adventures, is just as enjoyable as the Kjelgaard & Helmericks stories and are highly recommended for all ages.

A moving tale for the young and old alike

I read this book in translation, as a child and now finally found it in the original language. The story of Micki and Nywa is gripping right from the start, simple and evoking emotions that far more complicated stories manage. The friendship of the pup and bear cub, the author's love for the wild will and should charm all.

My favorite book ever. Read all 22 of the Curwood books. When I started this book I thought, "Oh no, an animal story"; but liked it better than any other book. Liked it better than "Call of the Wild". Curwood is a national treasure, for Canada, and for the US.

Hi! These are the notes from my English Language Arts class. Oh, who am I? Well, some people said I was the smartest kid in class. I wrote everything you need to ace ENGLISH, from the GREEK ROOTS to the FICTION WRITING, and only the really important stuff in between-you know, the stuff that’s usually on the test!
 
I tried to keep everything organized, so I almost always:
• Highlight vocabulary words in YELLOW
• Color in definitions in green highlighter
• Use BLUE PEN for important people, places, dates, and terms
• Doodle a pretty sweet Alice in Wonderland and whatnot to visually show the big ideas
 
If you’re not loving your textbook and you’re not so great at taking notes in class, this notebook will help. It hits all the major points. (But if your teacher spends a whole class talking about something that’s not covered, go ahead and write that down for yourself.)

If you teach middle school, you will love this book.

This is an absolutely fantastic book which relates to middle schoolers visually and with the texts and examples given. I teach 7th grade and I plan on using this book in my classroom this school year. Just got the copy I preordered in the mail and I can't put it down. I think my students are going to really enjoy it as well.

Great Home School Resource...Even For Younger Grades

Going to use this as supplemental for home school. We will use it over several years getting deeper in to subjects as we go. Looks like a fab resource and will save me HOURS of time. I bought the whole set (World History, Ancient History, Science, Math and English). So did two of my fellow home school mom friends. We are all looking forward to using them as part of our curriculum.

I was happy to see this offered by Brain Quest for the older kids. I like the format, it's visually appealing, and it's thick but not overwhelming.

There are questions at the end of the sections, followed by answers on the other side of the page. Great for students who can handle being self guided.

I am really pleased at my initial look at of this series- For a review/ overview of basic info for the middle school student.

Now, if they would incorporate this idea into Highschool core courses that would be great!

About the Author
John R. Townsend, Professor of Chemistry at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, completed his B.A. in Chemistry as well as the Approved Program for Teacher Certification in Chemistry at the University of Delaware. After a career teaching high school science and mathematics, he earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry at Cornell University, where he also received the DuPont Teaching Award for his work as a teaching assistant. After teaching at Bloomsburg University, he joined the faculty at West Chester University, where he coordinates the chemistry education program for prospective high school teachers and the general chemistry lecture program for science majors. He has been the university supervisor for more than 60 prospective high school chemistry teachers during their student teaching semester. More confusing than the textbook

I wasted my money on this. The textbook examples are better and there are no solved book problems here at all. I have ordered the solutions manual and find that alot more helpful. If you need to choose, buy the sloutions manual instead!

The text clearly and effectively summarizes each section of each chapter of Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity including key terms, yet so does the actual textbook. If you are looking for practice problems for chemistry, this book is not in that ball park.

David Pannick QC writes a fortnightly legal column in The Times. He is a barrister at Blackstone Chambers in the Temple, London, where he specialises in all aspects of public law and human rights. He has been a Fellow of All Souls College since 1978 and is the general editor, with Lord Lester of Herne Hill QC, of Human Rights Law and Practice (Butterworths, 1999, 2nd edn March 2004).

More Musings on Legal/Judicial Goings-On

David Pannick, QC, Baron Pannick, has an awesome professional background, an Oxford degree and fellowship at All Souls College, as well as involvement in some of the most high profile recent UK cases. Some consider him one of the finest appellate advocates currently at the bar, having argued many cases before the House of Lords and the European Courts of Justice and Human Rights. He also writes serious books addressing topics like sex discrimination, the death penalty, and his primary area of practice, human rights law. Yet, the most serious fellow possesses a most refined sense of humor which he has deployed in a regular column on the law for the Times (of London) and books like "Judges" and "Advocates." However, while the humor flows deep and rich, Pannick also usually has a serious point he is making along with the laughts.

This collection of his Times columns (each of which runs a couple of pages) is no exception. One might well apply that old maxim, "truth is stranger than fiction" to these legal going-ons. The first section, with 24 columns, deals with judicial antics, some of which defy the imagination. Lance Ito (of OJ fame), Justice Douglas, Judge Larry Seidlin (who presided over the Anna Nicole Smith burial litigation) and a number of British judges populate this section. What is interesting about this section -- and the remainder of the book as well -- is that some of the most unfortunate examples are drawn from American state and federal courts. The second section of 19 columns turns its attention to some unfortunate actions of lawyers. Pannick's objective in these sections is not hard to discern: is this the best we can expect from judges and counsel engaged in the serious business of trying cases surrounded by the august trappings of the courtroom? I found the third section, on "legal entertainment," probably the most interesting, for the author zeros in on how the trial process is worked over in order to make for entertaining (but highly misleading) television shows. Pannick appears to be particularly fascinated by American programs, such as "LA Law" and "Ally McBeal, and apparently many of his British colleagues share this addiction. The final section on "unusual litigation" includes some more serious matters. All told, 76 columns are included supported by 34 pages of helpful notes and an index. Important fun if you are interested in law and the integrity of the legal process.

Pain of Humanity: Perhaps the Best 20th Century Drama

The great bulk of Eugene O'Neill's work was done between about 1914 and 1933, a period which saw him win Pulitzer Prizes for Beyond The Horizon, Anna Christie, and Strange Interlude as well as create The Emperor Jones, The Hairy Ape, Desire Under the Elms, The Great God Brown, and Mourning Becomes Electra. But around 1933 O'Neill--who struggled against physical ailments, alcoholism, and a host of personal demons--fell silent.

Although O'Neill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1936, he would remain silent for some ten years, leaving most to believe he had written himself out, was burned out, that his career was over. But in spite of tremendous personal issues, O'Neill continued to write in private, and during this period he would generate a string of powerful plays, many of which would not be released for performance until after his death in 1953. The legendary Long Day's Journey Into Night, closely based on his own family life, was written in the early 1940s. It was first performed in 1956--some three years after his death--at which time it too won the Pulitzer Prize.

The play presents the story of the Tyrone family. James Tyrone is a famous stage actor, now aging; his wife Mary is a delicately beautiful but sadly worn woman named Mary. Their two sons are studies in contrast: Jamie, in his late 30s, is wild--fond of wine, women, and song--and seen as a bad influence on younger Edmund, who is physically frail but intellectually sharp. The action takes place at their summer home, and begins in the morning; the family seems happy enough--but clearly there is something we do not know, something working under the surface that gives an unnatural quality to their interaction.

Over the four acts and next four hours the morning passes into afternoon, the afternoon into night. And we will learn the truth: the history of money grubbing, the alcoholism, the drugs, the personal failures, the seemingly endless cycle of self-defeating, self-destructive behavior in which the four are locked beyond hope of redemption. And as it progresses the play gathers itself into an almost unendurable scream of agony, a scream of truly cosmic proportions.

Why, you might ask, would someone wish to read--much less sit through--such a play? A work so painful that it often becomes difficult to continue reading or to look at the stage? I myself asked this question when I first encountered it. Over the years I have done quite a bit of theatre. In the early 1980s I played the role of Edmund; in the late 1990s I played the role of Jamie. On both occasions I found the play horrifically painful to perform. On both occasions I wondered if such a painful play could find an audience in small-town America. On both occasions Long Day's Journey Into Night sold out and not a person left the theatre before each performance ended.

Because, I think, the play taps into something that is universal but which is extremely difficult to express in simple terms. As O'Neill might say himself, it has a touch of the poet--but of a failed poet. Somehow, in some unique way, it speaks to the self-knowledge we all have of the hidden dreams that never came true, the little accommodations, the big and small failures that have stung us and changed us and over time made us--for better or worse--the beings that we are. It has humanity. It makes us see our own humanity. It makes us acknowledge the humanity of those around us.

Many, myself among them, regard this as O'Neill's finest play--and considering the great power that many of his works have, that is saying a great deal. It is also in some respects one of his most accessible plays: shorn of the experimentalism to which O'Neill was frequently drawn and beautifully simple, beautifully direct, even those unaccustomed to reading playscripts will find it a rapid and powerful read. For this reason it is really the only O'Neill script I recommend to casual readers. And I recommend it very, very strongly indeed. A great drama, both on the page and on the stage.

Long Day's Journey into Night is the play in which Eugene O'Neill, as he says in the dedication, had to "face [his] dead at last" by writing about the tragic dysfunctions of James, Mary, Jamie, and Edmund Tyrone, characters based respectively on O'Neill's father, mother, and brother, and O'Neill himself. It is set entirely at the O'Neill residence and takes place over the course of the day on which the family doctor confirms that 23 year-old Edmund has tuberculosis and must go to a sanatorium. There is relatively little action in the play aside from that; most of the dialogue relates to the other members of the Tyrone family facing the various problems that haunt them every day of their lives: Mary is addicted to morphine; Jamie is an alcoholic and at 33 seems unlikely to amount to anything; and James also has an alcohol problem but more importantly is still bitter about his childhood, which was cut short when he was obliged to go to work at a machine shop at the age of 10 because of the departure of his father.
The whole Tyrone family is in a state of despair, and it's hard to think of an author better at capturing despair than O'Neill (in no small part, one suspects, because he came of age in the sort of environment depicted in this play). O'Neill was certainly bitter about his past, but, importantly, he doesn't lose perspective. Although the way the Tyrones treat each other ranges from neutral to downright cruel, O'Neill does a splendid job of balancing this against the fact that they all love each other deeply and feel very unnerved whenever they realize that they're treating each other unfairly. Despite all the problems he faced as a young adult, O'Neill always viewed his family with a good deal of love and reverence, and that comes through in the play. As Mary puts it, "None of us can help the things life has done to us. They're done before you realize it, and once they're done they make you do other things until at last everything comes between you and what you'd like to be, and you've lost your true self forever." The tragedy of Long Day's Journey into Night lies in the fact that these great individuals have lost their true selves due to the various demons that haunt their lives.
Some of O'Neill's works could reasonably be criticized for featuring relatively one-dimensional characters and formulaic plots. In the case of Long Day's Journey, though, because O'Neill was able to rely on his own experiences, all four main characters are exceptionally deep and balanced, and the plot is distinctly unpredictable. Though I've very much enjoyed all the O'Neill plays I've read, it seems that in Long Day's Journey he finally put together all his talents and produced his crowning achievement.

O Neal is ruthlessly honest in this sordid, beautiful play

I read the play when I was 19. I stumbled upon it on a dime rack at the library. One day, I was moving and had some time on my hands until the movers arrived to haul away my stuff. I pulled out my copy and was never the same again. I sat on the floor and read from the late morning to dusk--when the light was no longer sufficient to read by. I hadn't noticed that my shoulder had begun to ache or that my throat was screaming for water, I was absorbed in the play as if I was receiving a vision. Anyone who claims that the play is not well-written doesn't understand literature, nor have they seen the staged production. (I'd highly recommend the movie with Katherine Hepburn). The honesty of the playwright will put you through an emotional ringer that is difficult to detach yourself from long after the reading is done. The fog horn, the deception, the cutting words of the players all haunt your dreams. This is a masterpiece.
