Karen Bonderud who was born and raised in Yellow Springs Ohio grew up practicing Wicca. The ancient tradition was practiced by her predecessors. Karen Felt that practicing Wicca was only part of her duty and diligence here on earth. She wanted to learn more, teach, and education the people of her religion. Karen has been teaching for a number of years through her convent. This book is a decent addition to any Wiccan's library, especially if you're a beginner like myself. It helps with so many tips and suggestions. The book takes you from the absolute beginning of having absolutely nothing for your altar to preparing your altar for rituals to helping you with the Gods & Goddesses to break down of each herb for spells and finally onto the spells.

Karen Bonderud is very detailed and helps you step by step with every spell, herb, explanation, etc. This is a great starter book!

I have to give this book FIVE stars because this book made me believe in the power of Wiccan Spells. I am afraid to give it anything less. Seriously, I kinda got this to mess around with my kids for Halloween. This book is no joke. It is very serious. I actually got a little nervous like I could have let something loose just by reading it. BUT...nerves or not...it is such a FASCINATING look inside something that I never considered before that I could not put it down. Reading this book is kinda like playing with a Ouiga board. It may start as a joke, but it rarely ends as one!!! So good and interesting!!!

About the Author
Don Tapping has worked for over twenty years to eliminate waste and improve bottom-line results in the telecommunications, medical, automotive, industrial, and aerospace industries. Tapping directed the lean implementation for Eaton Aerospace Division for over 5 years, with similar duties prior to that at Schlumberger Technologies, UNISTRUT Corporation, and Data Scan Services.

Tom Shuker has over thirty years’ experience in manufacturing and is currently President of Lean Concepts, LLC. Shuker recently participated in lean implementation within General Motors Corporation including two years at New United Motors Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI), a joint GM-Toyota Assembly Plant. He has also consulted for other manufacturers in the implementation of their lean manufacturing systems including Herman Miller, Autocam, Merilatt, Medtronics, Caterpillar, and Aeroquip Corporation–Division of Eaton.

Thorough review of VSM in the office

Ok, don't buy this book as a general "lean office" book - it's not that. It's ALL about mapping a value stream, running projects based on the value stream, and using VSM as the management tool for a lean office. I like that, but I felt that this book spends far too much time focused on the one tool, and doesn't emphasize that it's one tool that is part of an overall management system that will just require more.

Pros:
- Excellent, thorough, breakdown of VSM in the office
- Focused entirely on an office/service environment. It's not a retread with "manufacturing" replaced with "service" like some books.
- Visual, with excellent pictures and examples throughout

Cons:
- Only emphasizes one tool
- The wastes discussion was weak compared to other office books - I found several others to cover them much more thoroughly, with better examples.

What a welcome addition to the world of lean!

This book is such a welcome addition to my book shelf. I tried so hard last year to try to translate manufacturing value stream mapping to the transactional world and found it very difficult. This book simplifies the approach incredibly. There are some typos in the book as well as one figure that is missing some icons. The bad part about the book is that it does seem to spend a lot of time saying the same thing over and over and over again while skipping over some very important VSM concepts like dealing with multiple flows, etc. You need to have a good background in VSM and lean in order to absorb this book easily. I appreciate the fact though that the authors try to demonstrate the tools on three or four examples throughout the book, but why not put in a few other case studies all the way through???!!! I hate having just one complete case study like in the book Learning to See. Not all situations are the same so having several examples can be very helpful.

VSM for the Office

I found this to be a good book on translating the tools of manufacturing to an office environment. It communicates all of the basics that are required.

I've attended one of this consulting group's manufacturing classes. I found them to be dead on. I like the way they handled the accounting/cost/metric relationship to lean production. Basically, the current accounting standards will cause you to do things in opposition to what lean principles will have you do.

In some other office scenarios, I think this more traditional approach will not have all the pieces or tools required. I work in an industry where order entry is significantly more complex than the examples presented, a much higher degree of interaction with other players is required, and rework loops are significant part of the process (customer driven rework). ANITECH has an approach that tracks the information flow surrounding the work process, while applying the same lean techniques that are presented in this book.

Tracking the information flow provides an opportunity to sort out, automate, and lean out that information flow. There is tremendous leverage in this concept.

Pleasantly surprised on the effectiveness of this book

As a "I was born late, been late ever since" kind of gal I know a thing or two about procrastination. But I never really knew why I procrastinated.

I have read tons of productivity books such as Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity (my favorite of all of them), The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, etc. And although most are great at helping you set up a system, they don't really help you get and STAY motivated. Of course, I always get a boost after reading a wonderful get up and go book, I just find myself after a month or even a week losing my way.

That is until I read this book.

I have been so, so, so much more productive the last few months. I was trying to figure out why and it donned on me it was this book! For the first time in my life, I find myself stopping to see why I'm procrastinating on something. It may not sound like a big thing but that one act of figuring out what it is that is preventing me from doing what I need/want to do enables me to actually do it!

Even the fact that I'm actually filling out a review just shows you that I'm not procrastinating any more (I always say I'm going to leave a review for any product I buy on Amazon since its the reviews that help me in purchasing products - you know - give back).

I didn't follow the 2 step program in the back of the book so I can't attest to the efficacy of that program. But considering how impactful just reading the book is, I'm sure its great.

An excellent in-depth analysis of why we procrastinate and what to do about it

This book explains the complex psychological mechanics behind what we simply call 'procrastination'. It does it so well that we can see procrastination is just an outward symptom of much more complex subconscious processes that go on in our brains.

Highly recommended to anyone who felt, at any time in their life, that they are not living their life to their potential. If not anything else, this will reduce your guilt (by making you understand why you do what you do)

Best book on solving procrastination

The authors get into the psychology of procrastination, which no other book I have read does. This helps the reader get to the root of his or her problem. Although a few of the psychological explanations are tenuous at best, most of them are very good and will help many people understand their procrastination. The second part of the book gives actual methods to solve procrastination, which was explained psychologically in Part I. These methods are helpful and realistic (you are not expected to change overnight, and not even within weeks or months). The book was definitely worth the price.

About the Author
Huisheng Xie received his DVM at the Sichuan College of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine in Sichuan, China. He was an assistant and staff veterinarian in the College of Veterinary Medicine of the Beijing Agricultural University. After receiving his master of veterinary science in veterinary acupuncture, he was assistant and associate professor in the Beijing Agricultural University College of Veterinary Medicine. He received advanced training in human acupuncture at the Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the National Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and later earned his PhD from the University of Florida for investigation of the mechanisms of pain control in horses using acupuncture. Currently, he is clinical assistant professor and director of the acupuncture internship training program in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida. Dr. Xie is founder of the Chi Institute in Reddick, Florida, which trains veterinarians in Chinese acupuncture and herbal medicine (www.tcvm.com). He has received achievement awards from the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Science and Technology Committee, the Beijing Agricultural University, Nihon University (Japan), University of Mexico (Mexico), and China National Society of TCVM. He speaks internationally on veterinary acupuncture and herbal medicine, and is the author of numerous books and papers. His textbooks include Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, Vol. 1, Fundamental Principles.

Vanessa Preast received her DVM from the University of Florida in 2000. As a graduate of the Chi Institute, she became certified in small animal acupuncture. She incorporated acupuncture into her practice of small animal medicine and surgery. Currently, she is a doctoral student in teaching and learning. She coauthored and edited Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, Vol.1, Fundamental Principles.

Xie's Veterinary Acupuncture

I used the book to treat my two dogs. One dog I treated for itchy ears and nasal congestion, and the results were immediate relief. The other dog I treated for mania and hyperactivity with temors and the results were great. I used an energy point stimilator/indicator as I am not a vet or acupuncturist. I found the book easy to read and the illustrations clear. The points recommended for treatment worked well for my dogs issues. I will try to find the chinese herbal remedies recommended as well.

Until the present moment, it is the best book of veterinary acupuncture!

A well complete book, with the better localizations of points of acupuncture in animals (dogs and horses), that it is currently the main reference for medical veterinarians acupuncturists.
If you intend to buy a book veterinary acupuncture, this is the Book! I always recommend to my pupils.

Excellent overview of a slightly obscure subject

This is a fantastic and comprehensive overview of the systematic minerology of uranium and thorium minerals, including an overview of all the major ore deposits around the world. It is splendidly illustrated with pictures of almost every described species, and crystal structures where available.
Certainly a welcome addition to the limited library of books on radioactive minerals, admittedly a bit of an esoteric interest.

About the Author
Lord Roll was born in Austria and came to England in 1925. After a distinguished academic career he served in the Ministry of Food and the Treasury; in Whitehall, Washington and Paris. He was involved in Lend-Lease, the Marshall Plan, NATO, and the first Brussels negotiations. He ended his Civil Service career as Permanent Under-Secretary of State of the Department of Economic Affairs. Since 1966 he has been active in the City as an investment banker and is now President of the Warburg Group.

An Essential Read

Roll skillfully encompasses the history of economic thought in minute detail from Plato and Aristotle to the post-Keynesian economists. That said, by necessity, the book is intricate, dense, and progresses slowly. An important work, a book I'll go back to time and time again, and an essential read for anyone interested in economics and politics. Albeit, one which is more like having to eat your vegetables as a child.

The Urdu Language
Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and an official language of the six states in North India with significant Muslim populations. Both Urdu and Hindi are standard registers of the Hindustani language. Before the Partition of India, the terms Hindustani, Urdu, and Hindi were synonymous. Today, though mutually intelligible, they differ in their technical and literary vocabularies with Urdu influenced heavily by Persian and Arabic and Hindi by Sanskrit. There are close to 70 million native speakers of Urdu.

The way I like to learn a language

This is the second language I am learning from Pimsleur. I used their product to learn conversational modern Hebrew. Now I know Hebrew better than any other language I have ever learned. I am only getting started on Urdu, but it is fun and a good thing to occupy my mind during my long commute. The only weakness is that the course does not teach how to read or write the language.

The main point of this review is to refute the negative reviews that gave poor ratings to this product on the basis of disagreeing with the authors description of the Urdu language being based upon Hindustani and claiming that in Pakistan most people don't speak this version of the language. As most people who are learning Urdu are aware, Urdu shares many similarities with Hindi, so much so that many people consider the two to be dialects of the same language. The principal difference between the colloquial versions of both languages, as opposed to the text-book standard version taught in schools, is mainly in the script used to write the respective languages, with the Nastaliq-Persian/Arabic derived script used for writing modern urdu and the Devanagari script (descended from Sanskrit) being used to write Hindi. The other main difference between the two languages (at a beginner level) is actually more dependant on the speakers religion than on linguistics. For example, as most native Urdu speakers are Muslim, they tend to use Arabic/Persian/Turkish descended expressions for common greetings such as hello, goodbye, thank you etc. On the other hand, formal Hindi tends to use more words descended from Sanskrit for the same greetings. For example, in Urdu, hello is often Assalam Alaikum, which is borrowed from Arabic, whereas in Hindi it is Namaste, or Namaskar, which is of Sanskrit origin. In the real world, especially at the beginning level where most users of this program likely are, the differences between everyday spoken Urdu and Hindi are marginal. The fact is, the vast majority of the expressions taught in this course, being a beginner course that obviously doesn't focus on advanced grammar and vocabulary, can be used equally when speaking either Hindi or Urdu. Whether or not in your own mind you believe you are speaking Hindi or Urdu will be irrelevant to the person with whom you are speaking. In India, people of many different religious backgrounds use Hindi/Urdu as their principal method of communication and have virtually no trouble being understood by speakers of the opposite language. The negative reviews are clearly from people who have strong political views who want to distance all things Pakistani from India. Their personal feelings aside, to the average English speaker from a western country, these political disputes about Hindi vs Urdu are irrelevant. Pakistanis have virtually no trouble understanding Hindi speaking Indians, just as Hindi speakers from India have very little trouble understanding Urdu speaking Pakistanis. The only time difficulties arise with one group not understanding the other are in high level, formal discussions regarding religion or philosophy, and it will be only after many, many years of study that a second language learner of either language would be at a level where these differences would become relevant. The other problem with the negative reviews is that it appears by their own admission neither of them actually purchased and/or used this program, but instead based their reviews strictly upon their disagreement with the author's statement that Pakistani Urdu is based upon Hindustani. Having said all that, take my word as someone who has actually used this program, and has lived and worked in both India and Pakistan for many years, that the language taught in this course is very much the Urdu language as used in Pakistan and would be equally understood by Hindi and Urdu speakers in India.

Pimsleur language program

I recently bought the Pimsleur Urdu language program. Without a doubt Pimsleur is the best way to learn a foreign language. I've tried several other programs and most are much more expensive and don't teach much that is useful to a beginning student. A few days into this Urdu program and I already have useful words and phrases. Don't waste your money on Rosetta Stone.

Quite tasteful

A small-time entertainment promoter Martin Mirkheim owes $147,956 in back taxes. Martin, it seems, wants to do "something of significance"--specifically, to produce a movie. The movie he has in mind will be based on a book by his hero, Dr. Luthor Waxling, a late-night television self-help guru. Waxling is a menacing, neo-Nietzschean type who preaches that "the past is pointless," that apologies are worthless, and that strength is its own justification. Although Martin is enchanted with this message, his only real "strength" is his shamelessness: desperate to find financing for his dream project, he refuses to acknowledge any of the incredibly humiliating things that happen to him along the way. There is a shere twist in plot and in a twist of fate the enemy is the victor.
