Excellen book on Xuan Kong Da Gua

I have read many Feng Shui books, this is one of the best books on Xuan Kong Da gua. Joy Yap books are way expensive and need to by 3 of them to get the information in this single book. Definitly not for beginners. After alll the title says Master Level. This book is not even for average Feng Shui practioners who simply practice Black Hat or Pakua Lo Shu techniques. One thing can be assured if you understand the content of this book then you have undesrtood the Space dimension of Feng Shui.

One may have to use some software or cheat sheets to get all of corelations between Hexa grams built.

A Good Supplement for XKDG Students

There aren't many books written on this subject. I knew of one one of the authers from a Feng Shui forum as a knowledgable person on this field and I wanted to try the book. And I am happy I did. I find it to be a good supplement for serious XKDG student. What I like most about this book, the authers point out repeatedly that applications of XKDG must not violate the Flying Stars.

Four great classic short stories

This is a collection of four early Le Fanu short stories and the first of the manuscripts by Rev. Francis Purcell. The stories cross several genres, all with a dark theme though not necessarily supernatural.

The four included short stories are:

The Ghost and the Bone-Setter (first published January 1838)
The Fortunes of Sir Robert Ardagh (March 1838)
The Last Heir of Castle Connor (June 1838)
The Drunkard's Dream (August 1838)

It would be hard for me to pick a favorite as each of them is so different in style.

Classic Horror-Stories With A Dash of Humor!

This was a pretty good collection of classic short stories. Some horrific, some not so much. It seemed that all of them had a little bit of humor, which I liked. I also like Le Fanu's writing style, which flows easily, despite its age.
A Drunkard's Dream was my favorite story in this volume, because it's interesting to think about what other books or films this tale might have inspired.
Recommended for fans of classic horror short stories.

Good, but you should pay less than $52 for this book

This book is very good and detailed. It is definitely a classic book in what regards to international evidence. Everybody quotes it. The only problem is that it is a bit old.

It has chapters related to:
The nature and sources of the rules of evidence;
Order and time of the submission of evidence;
The Production of Evidence;
The Admission of Evidence;
Documentary Evidence;
Testimonial Evidence;
Evidence subject to special rules of admission and evaluation;
Propossitions not requiring proof and

Each of these themes is thoroughly analyzed.

Painting the Word: Christian Pictures and their Meanings by John Drury, an Anglican priest who is dean of Christ Church, Oxford, is a wise, accessible, elegant, and beautiful book about Christian art. Painting the Word presents dazzling color reproductions of masterpieces by Rembrandt, Raphael, Rubens, Velázquez, Piero della Francesca, Cézanne, and others, accompanied by a text that does not merely analyze and explain these pictures but also meditates upon them, and even encourages readers to inhabit them. Drury's introduction explains his project: "This is a book about how Christian paintings convey their messages. It takes on whole paintings. It is not content with just picking symbols out of them for identification. Composition, color, contents (including architecture and landscape as well as figures) and the ways in which the paint itself is handled--all are treated as part and parcel of their religious meanings." Drury justifies his critical approach by pointing out that these pictures come from a time when western civilization and Christianity were coterminous. Contemporary spectators are visitors to this foreign world. However, Drury expertly draws us into this world in light, straightforward language. (Many of the chapters in this book began as sermons.) "Worship and looking at pictures require the same kind of attention," Drury explains, "a mixture of curiosity with a relaxed readiness to let things suggest themselves in their own good time." Historic Christianity is a foreign country, and we are tourists, just visiting but often not understanding. Drury offers a guidebook of sorts to help the contemporary reader decipher the messages conveyed in Christian art. Priest, scholar, and dean of Christ Church at Oxford, Drury is well qualified to offer this course. Using paintings from the 14th to 17th centuries, he attempts to show us the breadth and depth of culture at that time so that we can better understand the theology and meaning behind Christian art. Aiming at the educated lay reader, Drury peppers the chapters with poetry and Bible quotes. The paintings discussed are selective, focusing on religious theme rather than periods. Though one wishes the illustrations had been bigger, this well-written art history and art appreciation is a delight to read. Highly recommended for larger public libraries or any art history collection.

Beautiful Book to Ponder Painters View of Scripture

This is an absolutely exquisite book, with highgloss paper and wonderful color reproductions of marvelous paintings.
To this, Drury offers his expert commentary on how one might look at these paintings to see the painter's perspective on the Christian faith.
One will learn much about looking at paintings, and will never casually observe a painting again. I especially have grown fond of two paintings that this marvelous book acquainted me with, Titian's "Vendramin Family" and Lippi's "The Annunciation." Drury's comments here are very useful.
I would like to give this five stars, but withheld this because of my disagreement theologically with Drury. His theology is far too liberal for me, and I'm afraid that he will sway many who will trust his opinion of Divine Scripture as "the gospel truth, or historical critical truth."
A book to consider to turn to to aid one in viewing Christian painting.

The Artist as Agent of the Revelatory

On the most basic of levels, John Drury, Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, provides a rich commentary on paintings with religious and Biblical themes hanging in The National Gallery, London. He admits from the start that he will be introducing the reader to a Christian world-view that he cannot take for granted, as the painters he surveys did. His writing, while exquisite, did not immediately captivate me. However, his insights and appreciation for the details of these paintings kept me reading through to the conclusion. Drury concentrates on selected works from the Middle Ages, through the Renaissance and Baroque, to Velazquez in the 17th Century. In so doing, he demonstrates how many of the central ideas of Christendom reflected the style, cultural currents, and science of their day. He sees the progression of religious painting into the secular as a natural development in artistic production and theological thought.
I wish Drury had used more examples outside the walls of The National Gallery. He made me want to spend more time with Rembrandt. He places Rubens as a pacifist. He also tantalizes the reader with an excursion into the modern, with appreciation for a couple of works of Cezanne which he augments with quotes from Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He eloquently ends the main section of the book with a marvelous description of any artist who provides a sense of the revelatory: "...painters, if they are to be `God's spies', have to go a good way further than theologians down the ethical road of incarnation, with the silent renunciations, the obedient humility and the love of the world of mortal appearances which it demands, if they are to make the mystery of things visible."

Glorious images, beautiful ideas

This book is without doubt one of the more beautifully prepared and printed books in my collection. Done by the Yale University Press in association with the National Gallery of London, virtually every page is a treasure. There are nearly two hundred full-colour-process reproductions of artworks throughout the text, and every page (not just the colour plates) are heavy bond, high-gloss stock that shows the ink and colour with vibrancy and depth.

John Drury spent a career at both Cambridge and Oxford dealing in matters of theology, ecclesiology, liturgy, and art. I discovered Drury's book while attending a course at my own seminary on the church and the arts, and kept finding myself frustrated at the rapid pace we would go through topics (a frustration I know the professor teaching the course shared - how does one do justice to 2000 years of music, architecture, and art in a mere 15 sessions?). I sought out supplemental materials to help fill out the outline, and Drury's text serves the purpose in many ways.

Drury states his purpose early in the text. `This is a book about how Christian paintings convey their messages. It takes on whole paintings. It is not content with just picking symbols out of them for identification. Composition, colour, contents (including architecture and landscape as well as figures) and the ways in which the paint itself is handled - all are treated as part and parcel of their religious meanings.' This is a holy and holistic approach.

Drury adopts a kind of picture-describing approach (one that he terms `historically iconographical'). This involves absorbing details while understanding context and material. This is the same kind of attention that worship requires (and indeed, the Eastern church has always had this kind of physical artistic interplay with the tradition of use of icons for prayer, meditation and worship purposes) - it requires an openness to experience and feeling while also benefitting from understanding and guidance.

Major artists and works studied in detail in this text include the work of Tiepolo (c. 1750s), the Wilton Diptych (anonymous, c. 1390s), Titian (c. 1510-40s), Duccio (c. 1310s), Filippo Lippi (c. 1450s), Poussin (c. 1630-50s), Rembrandt (c. 1640s), Piero della Francesca (c. 1450-70s), Caravaggio (c. 1600s), Rubens (c. 1630s), Velazquez (c. 1610s), Cezanne (c. 1900s), and others. Most presentations begin by showing the whole work, then proceeding to look at individual characteristics or highlights often pulled aside in side images or isolated for greater emphasis. The text and artwork is arranged in good pattern throughout the text.

Throughout his text, Drury makes a repeated call for care, meditation and attention to be given to the artwork as well as the response to the artwork. He makes that statement that we should stay in front of the images `longer than people usually do' - noticing in museums, art shops, churches and other places that people tend to shuffle past rather than give attention to the most stunning and sublime works of art. Drury draws in history, theology, philosophy, literature, biblical references and images, and other cultural and contextual references to make the experience of these works a full and profound one. This is not a book to be read quickly or glanced over lightly.

Drury includes a narrative annotated bibliography rather than a simple list; he provides both a general bibliography for the entire text as well as a selected bibliography for each chapter/topic.

This is a wonderful book, a great gift for oneself or for others. It is particularly good for those who want a deeper experience and understanding of the way in which art has and can interact and enhance one's relationship with Christianity and its message.

I was delighted to find them in book form with captions written ...

Having seen Joel Koosed's WABI-SABI photographs in a gallery, I was delighted to find them in book form with captions written by the photographer. The photos are, in themselves, beautiful representations of their title which "seek to find beauty in the imperfection of all things as they evolve and devolve back into nothing." One sees stark realism, vivid color, amazing natural beauty, form void of detail or newness. But the book reveals in the captions of the photos, places, friends, moods, seasons, nights and days experienced by the capturer. We discover the heart and mind of the photographer. Each picture makes a statement that is completed in its caption, giving a poetic dimension to the experience. The book is a unique work of art.

Easy to read, but keeps all the details!

This book makes it simple to read, so it doesn't take as long to get through chapters as other textbooks. It doesn't leave any details out, either, so it's really the best of both worlds.

rich and detailed with beautiful illustrations

I purchased the second edition of this book and am thrilled with it.

The illustrations are some of the most beautiful and helpful that I have seen in any neuroscience textbook. The descriptions are clear, the mechanisms are systematically laid out, and research anecdotes are sprinkled throughout.

What is great about the developmental perspective is it helps you understand at an intuitive level that the brain is not a set of compartmentalized "brain areas" wired together like a digital computer. Instead, the brain is a complex 3-dimensional organ with a continuous structure that is the result of cell proliferation, tissue folding, and self-wiring.

The research anecdotes are helpful because they give you a sense for how dynamic and new developmental neuroscience is as a field, and they show just how indirect the methods often need to be to uncover the processes of cellular differentiation and axonal wiring.

This book, especially with the illustrations and attached CDROM, truly seems to be a labor of love.

Decent content, but needs editing and is slightly confusing

"Development of the Nervous System" is a textbook which appears to be an introductory text to the field. The textbook is supposed to be appropriate for undergraduates, however, as a biology graduate student with some previous exposure to neurobiology, I had some difficulties with the text because of some of the reasons mentioned below.

It was difficult not to be distracted by the numerous grammatical and spelling errors. There were so many of them (for example, 'roll' when the authors meant 'role' and 'spacial' instead of 'spatial'), I wondered if the text were ever edited.

Even without the mistakes in English, the textbook suffers from other flaws. One major problem is that the authors do not bother to explain basic terms or concepts before using them when describing experiments. For example, the authors never define the difference between 'afferent' and 'efferent' neuronal projections, but refer to the terms profusely. Ironically, one of the most common grammatical errors in the textbook was the use of 'effect' when the authors meant 'affect.'

A colleague of mine who borrowed the book from me remarked that the index was not very useful; I also noticed some mistakes in the index.

Having said that, one of the major strengths of the text is the organization of the chapters, which proceed logically from the earliest neural induction events to the behavior of a whole organism. The introductory paragraphs of each chapter are also well written; they relate the topics to something that should be tangible to everyone.

Another major strength is the introduction of concepts by discussing the experiments behind them. Importantly, the text describes experiments from many different model organisms and using a variety of techniques. Abundant figures accompany the text and sufficiently illustrate concepts and experiments.

The content of the textbook is decent, but to be more useful (especially as an introductory text), this textbook would benefit from:
1) editing for English
2) an improved, more thorough and accurate index
3) a glossary or definitions and explanations within the text
4) and perhaps side "boxes" explaining some of the experimental techniques discussed.

A must-have for all bobbin lacers

This is my personal lacemaking bible. Especially helpful for those who have little or no access to other lacemakers, it is chock-full of diagrams showing virtually every technique imaginable. There are no patterns in this book; it is purely technique. Still, without it I would have lost my mind on several occasions. If you are learning bobbin lace, this book is one of the best buys you could possibly make.

A definite must for bobbin lace makers

Bridget Cook's Practical Skills (the Cook Book among fans) is a definite must for lacemakers. This is not a pattern book, nor a beginner book. It is the ultimate companion for bobbin lace makers, providing answers to almost every technical problem that arises when making bobbin lace. More often than not Cook provides several solutions to a problem, so you can choose the solution that suits your lace best. This book has saved my lace (and my sanity) several times and I heartily recommend it.

Not for first-time lace makers

While this is a very good book, it can be intimidating to the beginning lace maker.

I received this book and several other books when I decided to teach myself bobbin lace. The sheer overwhelming amount of diagrams, information, and instructions was too much. I put this book aside and used the other, simpler, books to get started on the basics and to make my first projects. I now use Practical Skills as a reference manual for looking up specific stitches or alternate methods, but it should not be the first book a lace maker gets. It contains skill sets but not patterns, so be sure to learn the basics before looking for this book.
