nice 4th grade social studies book

Perfect for my son's 4th grade social studies homeschool curriculum. Has lots of optional writing exercises, study guide projects, and map exercises, if you have time for those extras. The questions at the end of each section might just be enough, though.

We haven't started yet (homeschooling), so we'll see what my 4th grader thinks. It looks good to ME at least. Lots of nice pictures. Variety of content. Thick book. Some multicultural subjects.

Book arrived quickly, is in good condition.

The Only Book of its Kind Available

This was a must-have book for my library. No one else has Clifford Stone's credentials to realistically describe the facts of "interfacing" with alien cultures. The book is not as hard to read as others have described. If you have a genuine passion for knowledge in this super secret area you will get what Clifford is communicating, in spite of less than perfect sentence structure.

Clifford Stone does the best possible job of speaking out on "sensitive topics" without running afoul of his national security oath (and getting neutralized). His sensitivity and compassion is very evident and you get a sense of what he has been through, starting at a very early age.

If you like Clifford's interviews in the web, you will like this book. People should also be aware that Clifford has talked to others besides Project Camelot on the internet. Inquiring minds who broaden their horizons beyond Camelot will not be disappointed with what they hear.

Until we get full disclosure, Sgt Clifford Stone is The Source for credible descriptions of crash retrievals.

This is a unique book. I would like to see Clifford write another one. There are some repetitive stories due to interview take outs, but the book is very enlightening concerning certain information that most UFO writers either don't know or are afraid to tell.

CLIFFORD STONE IS THE REAL DEAL ... BUT THIS BOOK ISN'T

I have tremendous respect for Sgt Clifford Stone. In my opinion, he is absolutely the real deal. I believe completely that he did what he did and saw what he saw, and it is all too obvious that it has had a profound effect upon him. So when I saw this book I just had to have it. Unfortunately, it is a short and somewhat disjointed account of various aspects of Sgt Stone's life, with the stuff we really want to read about -- the truth of the alien phenomenon -- conspicuous by its paucity. I get the impression that this is very much an amateur effort. A serious editor and a somewhat more focused approach to what is surely the story of the millenium would have made this book a classic. Unfortunately the opportunity was lost, and I fear that this will do more to harm Clifford Stone's otherwise fine reputation than add to it.

Great book giving a realistic description of how the maths work in real dsp applications. Necessary for every student in either DSP or comms to essentially understand and feel what is described in theory.

Excellent practical introduction to DSP

Having used this book to develop actual applications in the real world, I can heartily recommend it with some authority. Most books that cover this subject either skip over the math entirely, leaving you with a vague concept but no useable skills, or dive head-deep into pages of math, giving the impression that the subject is hopelessly complex. Even when the math is adequately covered, there are often "understood" but unexplained conventions in the notation that can lead you very astray. With the MathCad examples you can work with actual useable systems (in simulated form) as you study, making it possible to crack this hard-shelled nut more easily. And the use of MathCad keeps the author honest - everything has to be explicitly defined using well-known MathCad conventions to work. So if you see it in the book, you can do it in the real world. It is also easy to extend or customize the examples, making it possible to develop actual systems with the examples as a starting point. It is not, however, possible to save this work with the supplied "reader" edition of MathCad.

Caveats? It helps to have a working knowledge of MathCad or a similar tool, but this is not absolutely necessary. A tutorial is supplied. If you are serious about using DSP you should have MathCad, MatLab or a similar tool available. To do all the transformations and algebra by hand would take forever and you would miss some of the most useful tools. You definitely need a PC to get the most from this book.

It's for industry-oriented Mathcad program.

I got this textbook in late April and is in great shape with CD un-opened.
It provides me a lot of examples in version 7.0 but still useful for current version 14.0 or 15.0 homework.
It has plenty of examples regarding to poles and zeroes plotting, which may be useful to my next homework assignment.
I said "maybe", because the examples of poles and zeroes are advanced than our homework assignments--use z-transform and FFT.
Therefore, I think that this textbook is good for industry level.
Do not anticipate too much for college level.

An Excellent Analysis

This book is a detailed, mostly political account of the Korean War and how Harry Truman and Douglas MacArthur dealt with it via their respective responsibilities. It's an objective account, letting the reader to decide who made the most serious errors in judgment and policy. Overall, the hugest strategic mistake was the invasion of North Korea. Credit MacArthur with that one, even though most Americans thought it was a good idea at the time - eliminate the bastards so they can't invade the South again in the future. The book's fourteen chapters are divided into three parts: Part 1 "The Korean War, June to November 1950: The Period Of North Korean Aggression; Part 2 "The Korean War, December 1950 to April, 1951: The Period Of Chinese Communist Intervention; and Part 3 "The MacArthur Hearings." Any Korean War buff will find it fascinating reading.

An Absolute Delight

Oh, this was *such* a fun story!
Cherry Adair takes a faintly taboo subject - man/woman love towards your step-siblings - and makes a wonderful and sexy romp!
Cat Harris, daughter of a serial relationship mama, wants a family. A real family. One she gets in spades when her mama marries into the Van Buren family. Her mama doesn't stay married, but Cat remains close to her step dad and step brother. Luke isn't really nice to her and Cat spends years hoping for Luke to turn into a real big brother.
Unfortunately, by the time Luke turns into her dream big brother, she discovers she's helplessly in love with him.
After the death of Luke's father, whom she's been taking care of, Cat decides to join Luke in the "big city" and try to land her a husband - and she decides Luke is going to help her. She figures that Luke will realize she's there...and available...and he'll fall in love with her.
What follows is an absolute delight. And if you can keep from laughing during the opening scene of the book, you have more control than I do!!

Fun & Sexy

Catherine Harris has been in love with Luke Van Buren since she was a teenager. Determined to snag the elusive bachelor once and for all, she concocts a plan aimed at getting the committment-phobic Luke to see her as a sexy, available woman. She tells Luke that she wants to get married, and as her friend, she'd like him to help her find Mr. Right.
Luke, meanwhile, doesn't think any man is worthy of Cat, himself included. Nevertheless, he agrees to help her despite the jealousy that plagues him. It doesn't take long, however, for Luke to realize that the only Mr. Right he wants in Cat's life is himself.
Cherry Adair's latest release is a sexy and delightful romp that satisfies from start to finish. I highly recommend picking up a copy of this one.

Small book----Big Delight!!!

This is a small book and my first by Cherry Adair; about Step-siblings. Cat Harris loves Luke, no blood-kin, and wants him to love and notice her as his sister. As Luke turns into the perfect brother for Cat, she discovers she is in love with him. He discovers he is attracted to her and trys to ignore the way he feels so he can be a "perfect" brother. The story is delightful and at times I literally laughed out loud. I fell-in-love with Cat and Luke as they SEAL their fate. And I fell in love with Cherry Adair's sensual,sexy, and warm writing style.

good lessons in clarity of writing

Cotter offers a detailed, deconstructionist approach to writing a professional news story. Numerous aspects of the crafting of a story are looked at, and the reader can profitably read this book slowly, to absorb the lessons. There is an emphasis on writing for a traditional newspaper. Examples are generously drawn from major newspapers like the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. While the author is British, she writes for both a British or American reader. So you can see nuances like different jargon used on both sides of the Atlantic.

Traditional also means having an understanding of what a Page One article should be like. Something that is not as critical if you, say, intend to write for a purely web-only publication. Speaking of the web, there are indeed references to it scattered throughout the book. But the lessons offered in clarity of writing are generally applicable to any media that you want to write for.

Colleen Cotter's academic take on journalists and the language of news is fascinating, especially to those of us who practice it. In the hurly burly atmosphere of day to day reporting, it's a reminder of our function and purpose, and of the ways, internalized to us, that it is apprenticed and practiced. Nice work!

An Excellent Brief and Balanced Account

This is the best brief book on Iraq and its history as it tells the story of this country starting with its pre-Islamic times of the Sessanids and going well into modern day. The brilliance of this book is based on two factors. First, its choice of what to highlight and what to leave out was extremely successful and relevant for those who want to read history to understand modern day Iraq, and second, its dependency on the bottom lines of reliable secondary sources instead of amassing a big number of quotes from primary sources in order to make a point or two.

The choice of what to cover and how to cover events from Iraq's history yielded this extremely helpful book that brings 5000 years of history into this concise and brief book.

Abdullah's style is extremely catching and flows with practically no repetition. Unlike most history books on the subject, Abdullah economizes with the number of names and dates that he included in the book in order not to distract the reader's attention by bombarding him/her with an unlimited number of often irrelevant names.

Furthermore, Abdullah maintains much needed objectivity when telling Iraq's story at the time most of history books on the Middle East are loaded with prejudice and either explicit or hidden propaganda.

Other valuable insights include Abdullah's tracing of the regional influence on Iraq, both from the Sunni Arab West and the Shiite Persian East. Abdullah also writes with the current internal Iraqi divisions in mind and as you finish the book, you will certainly end up with the impression that history repeats itself.

Iraq - The Original Melting Pot

Grasping to make some sense of the chaos that is today's Iraq, I found A Short History of Iraq by T.A.J. Abdullah to be a throroughly engaging and enlightening read. Concise and with no apparent ax to grind Abdullah helps the inquiring reader gain some clarity to questions like "Who are these people of the Garden of Eden, caught betwen the Persians and the Turks?" What is the attraction of the poor of Baghdad to figures like Muqtada al-Sadr? What are the roles of Imams and shaykhs? How do the lingering shadows of the Ottoman Empire give a modern basis to the strife between Shi'i and Sunni. What is so important about Najaf and Karbala, why does everyone seem so contentious and why were the British so anxious to move back into Basra as the invasion wound down. After reading Professor Abdullah's book, today's chaos will seem no less chaotic. Taking account of two thousand years of turbulent history, however, gives one a feeling of empathy for the people civilizaton's oldest melting pot, and maybe a grain of hope.

I would recommend A Short History of Iraq to anyone who longs for a better understanding or feels compelled to offer an opinion on what he sees on the evening news, not the least of whom might be the commentators. I would like to say "Thank you" to Professor Abudllah for his timely work.

A good introduction to Iraq

Succinct, informative, and well-written. Abdullah's A Short History of Iraq is a good overview of Iraq's history and a must read for those seeking a general overview of the political and economic development of a nation that has spent its fair share of time in the news in recent years. Readers will learn about Iraq's divisive history, the strategic location of Baghdad (Iraq's capital) and how that influenced the entire country's history. America's leaders would have been well served had they read this history before electing to launch an invasion in 2003; they would have likely recognized a nation skeptical of foreigners and deeply divided across religious and social classes, making it social disorder and violence a near certainty in the absence of a powerful, dictatorial authority. Once Saddam Hussein was removed from power, America and its coalition failed to fill the ensuing vacuum and a borderline civil war commenced.

So why only three stars? Although tremendously informative, Abdullah's work was perhaps too short. Of course, this book was meant to be a survey, not an in depth examination of the nation's entire history. That being said, there were several moments that felt so brief, that, even for a general survey, a certain level of depth was lacking. At times, the writing was a bit dry as well, but not so much so as to distract the reader from the material. Admittedly, these critiques are primarily linked to one's personal taste; others may find the writing style and depth to be perfectly satisfactory.

All that being said, Abdulah's A Short History of Iraq is just what a three-star review suggests it is: likable, well-written, but not spectacular. An interesting follow up would be to read Abdullah's take on post-war Iraq and how the United States handled the transitionary period and how Iraq's newly formed government is faring today. Abdullah has certainly proved to be insightful and an astute observer of Iraqi history. Every Western pundit seems to have an opinion regarding America's role in Iraq and the broader Middle East, and it is refreshing to read the work of a qualified person outside this realm. Abdullah's conclusion ends on an optimistic tone; whether or not the author believes the nine years since this book's publication have lived up to that positive prognostication would be a fascinating read.

Lots of information

This book explains how Fibonacci numbers (which have been around since the 12th century) when applied correctly can help predict price movements correctly about 70% of the time. You get instructions on how to draw a Fibonacci grid using software or manually. There are examples and charts, along with 4 rules you should use when utilizing this method. I found it quite informing.

This is a very well-written ebook. It's short yet informative and easy to understand. The writer started off by given a brief overview of the history of the Fibonacci Numbers and also how to draw the Fibonacci Grid. I really appreciated the real world examples used in Chapter 4. The important rules which were in the penultimate chapter are invaluable and made the book even better. Love it!!
