Ignore the jazzhermit, this book is a winner!

I was prompted to write this response due to "jazzhermit"'s completely ill-considered, ill-informed and, quite frankly, loony "review" of this fantastic book. Echo and Reverb is one of the best books on a relationship between sound technology and social history one would ever hope to find. In short, Doyle provides a complete history of the sonic treatment of sound in the recording studio, including the emergence of acoustic effects, notable examples from recording history and ultimately the psycho-acoustic ramifications of sound processing in the recording studio, by way of some of the best-known pre and early rock'n'roll records.

After having read this book, I was prompted to do further research, and thanks to Wikipedia, I am now aware that Peter Doyle is a critically acclaimed academic AND fiction writer, which would seem to make sense, as the style is fluid and accessible and not simply some overly verbose academic treatise. In fact the book was the recipient of an "Association of Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) 2006 award for Best Research in Record Labels and General History", so I would take that as a more appropriate indicator of its erudition and quality.

Furthermore, as a music lover and historian, I am a self-confessed taskmaster when it comes to historical data and trajectory. This book never sets a foot wrong, providing an absolutely comprehensive discussion of recording techniques, and the studios in which these new sonic innovations (Sun, Chess et al) took place.

Why the previous reviewer would have such problems with the book is beyond me, as it is one of the finest elaborations on the emergence of effects/audio treatments and the records that drove these innovations that one could ever purchase.

Echo and reverb: Much more than just cool sounds

Echo and reverb - together with tremolo, arguably the coolest effects ever conceived in audio. Some of us wierdos could listen to them all day. But beyond groovy tonality, there is a much deeper historical and cultural import in these atmospheric sounds which dates back to the proverbial Age of Antiquity. Doyle identifies this history and social meaning in a rigorous and yet endearingly poetic manner that commences with masculine (reverb) and feminine (echoic) implications of each effect and follows a thorough trajectory until the onset of stereo in the late `50s. For any audiophiles grappling with the issues of accuracy vs musicality, you'll be pleased to know that these quasi-religious debates were happening as long ago as the 1920's (realist vs romanticist) with echo/reverb clearly being identified with the latter which in turn is clearly identified with the personal liberation of the outsider and the underclass.

Doyle is great writer - very articulate, poetic and a true fan of this stuff. I recommend this book to enthusiasts of the original blues and rockabilly era as well as audio nuts.

File this one next to yer copies of Colin Escott and Peter Guralnick. A fine read.

About the Author
Dr. Charles B. “Chuck” Corbin is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Exercise and Wellness at Arizona State University. He has published more than 200 journal articles and is the senior author, sole author, contributor to, or editor of more than 70 books including Concepts of Physical Fitness (14th ed.), winner of the McGuffey Award (TAA); Concepts of Fitness and Wellness (7th ed.); Fundamental Concepts of Fitness and Wellness (2nd ed.); and Fitness for Life (5th ed.), winner of the Texty Award (TAA). His books are the most widely adopted college and secondary school texts in the area of fitness and wellness. Dr. Corbin is internationally recognized as an expert in physical activity, health and wellness promotion, and youth physical fitness. He has keynoted more than 35 state AHPERD Conventions, made major addresses in more than 15 different countries, and presented numerous named lectures (Cureton Lecture, ACSM; Hanna, Sargent, and Distinguished Scholar, NAKPEHE; Prince Phillip, British PEA; and Weiss and Alliance Scholar, AAHPERD). He is past president and Fellow of AAKPE, Fellow of ACSM, and Fellow of the North American Society of HPERDP. He is a life member of AAHPERD. Among his awards are the Healthy American Fitness Leaders Award (President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports-PCPFS, National Jaycees), AAHPERD Honor Award, Physical Fitness Council Honor Award, the COPEC Hanson Award, and the Distinguished Service Award of the PCPFS. Dr. Corbin was named the Alliance Scholar by AAHPERD and the Distinguished Scholar of NAKPEHE. He is a member of the Advisory Board of Fitnessgram, was the first chair of the Science Board of the PCPFS, and was recently elected to the NASPE Hall of Fame.

Greg Welk is an associate professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance at Iowa State University (ISU). He received his master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Iowa and his doctorate (PhD) in Exercise and Wellness from Arizona State University. Prior to coming to ISU, Welk worked at Eastern Michigan University, where he developed a fitness and wellness course that was required for all students. Welk was later employed at the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas, where he directed the Childhood and Adolescent Health Division and contributed to the development of the FITNESSGRAM youth fitness program. He continues to serve as the Scientific Director of the FITNESSGRAM program and is active in local, state, and national efforts to promote physical activity in youth. Welk’s research focuses on the development and validation of tools to assess physical activity behavior and on understanding factors that influence physical activity behavior. He has over 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals/books and has made more than 70 presentations at national and regional meetings.

William R. Corbin is a recognized expert in health and wellness. He is well published in the areas of behavioral medicine and addictive behaviors, with expertise in high-risk behaviors. He received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Georgia and completed his residency training at the Medical University of South Carolina. Corbin completed a three-year postdoctoral fellowship funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) at the University of Texas in Austin. He is currently an assistant professor and the Director of Clinical Training at Yale University. Corbin’s longitudinal research, funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), focuses on the relationship between alcohol use and other high-risk behaviors (i.e., drug use, unsafe sexual practices, and aggression) during adolescence and early adulthood. Corbin also conducts experimental research on the effects of alcohol on cognition and behavior and is actively involved in alcohol prevention with college students. Corbin is an experienced teacher in the areas of health psychology, clinical psychology, and addictive behaviors.

Karen Welk received her master’s degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Iowa (1989). She has worked professionally as a physical therapist in a variety of settings and states. She is currently working in an outpatient physical therapy clinic for Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, Iowa. Welk specializes in manual therapy and aquatic therapy and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). Her interest in sports and physical development has led her to conduct independent reviews on back health and back pain. Welk also has considerable experience related to safe and contraindicated exercises, and she applies this experience in her professional practice.

Be aware that this book is not a hard or paper back, it is the book ready to be inserted into a hard binder and I say a hard one so that the pages do not tear. I did not mind the books format but I wanted to point it out to the people that may have missed this small detail.
Furthermore, the book arrived in the mail in the best, most perfect condition. It was unopened and sealed. It was easy to use and the condition of not being a book was surprisingly convenient.

Pretty standard textbook

This is a textbook that is used for an introductory class in an exercise science curriculum. If you have taken other exercise science classes or nutrition classes you will have already read much of what this book covers. If you are going for an exercise science degree and take the lecture classes in order then this will give you a very, very basic introduction to concepts of fitness, nutrition, physiology etc. All concepts that will get fleshed out more in other classes. The nutrition part is definitely written with a slant toward the USDA guidelines, which you may or may not agree with.

Overall it is a pretty easy read. If you are in a semester long class you will likely cover the entire book (or the vast majority of it anyway). If you read fairly fast, it will take about 20-30 min to read through a chapter (if you are not taking notes, highlighting or trying to go for maximum retention). All the key terms and definitions are boxed off in the margins, and most of the big concepts are explained in a paragraph or two, and then fleshed out a little. It is not really a book that most people would get unless required for a class, but if you do need it, it is not the worst textbook in the world.

He Loves Me Not is a cute story about the popular girl who doesn't get the quarterback (or the guy she thought she wanted). In this situation, you may think she is the queen bee: who makes fun of the geeks and nerds, roaming the halls like the girl almighty. However, this is not the case. It's about a girl who lost sight of things around her and truly figures out the person she wants to become. Throw in a mysterious guy and things will definitely get interesting.

Thoughts:

PLOT LINE - The story was a really quick read. It's one of those stories where once you start, it will be over before you know it. The transition from scene to scene is smooth and you do look forward to the ending to see her fate. Will it be a fairy tale ending? Possibly. One thing I should warn you about is that it can be highly predictable. Sometimes you wish there was more depth and conflict between characters but if you want a light read, this book is for you.

CHEMISTRY - Although AJ is the musician, who can be more focused on his music than anything else, he can be distracted when someone catches his eye. A damsel in distress like Maggie, will definitely catch his eye. From the start, AJ is very sweet. You might not expect that from a rockstar dressed in all black and leather. When he finds someone who needs help, he will make sure to take care of them. He'll be there as a friend when everyone has left Maggie in the dust. When the friendship turns into something more...AJ will defend and save Maggie in the most adorable ways. Not only does AJ help her let loose of all the expectations around her, he builds back the confidence she has lost.

At first Maggie annoyed me! I love the less popular girl getting the guy but through the book you get to see the other side and lots of possibilities! Such a cute book!

Love This Story! A Breath Of Fresh Air!

I first became hooked and wanting to devour this book in the typical bookworm fashion after I read the blurb and my first thought was "okay I'm totally in!" I am constantly on the lookout for books that are a little quirky and that challenge the status quo haha one of the hazards of reading so many books a year is that you may read the exact same setup 50 times! With this one just as Tierney writes in the blurb what happens when its the cheerleader and all around golden queen of the high school gets a reality check? And the answer to that one is *insert ominous forboding music here* . . . Haha just kidding! You get a comedic tour du force that has to be read to be believed! 

Maggie has every thing going for her- more southern charm than Reese Witherspoon, a family who is well off financially, a spectacular GPA and a boyfriend who is the star of the Football team and looking at Division 1 prospects for college. She thinks life could not get any better! And then she gets the hugest reality check of her life when Bobby ends their relationship right before they are crowned Homecoming King and Queen and goes to make out with this new girl who wears a lot of black and heavier makeup (okay so basically me in high school!) 

Rightly so Maggie is crushed! I mean her and Bobby have been together since Kindergarten so its been a LONG time, after this crushing moment we get to see what Maggie is really made of! Even ladies who are out of their teen years can relate to Maggie so this story is so much more than just a teen novel haha her struggle to reinvent herself after being part of a couple for so long is both hilarious in ways and incredibly brave and touching and something I could definitely relate to myself even though i'm a little past high school age haha. 

There are many moments to where you are pleading with Maggie to just keep going and cheering her on, there are times to where you want to shake her momma because she is a little too tied up in apperances and giving Mags a diet and pushing no carb diets (there is nothing wrong with being healthy but it seems that at least at the beginning that  Maggie is under a lot of pressure to look perfect to uphold the family name) but through all these moments you stay engrossed in this story. For me it was one I couldn't put down once I got started! It would be the perfect vacation, beach read or a excellent book club read for your group of friends.

About the Author
Peretz Opoczynski (1892–1943), a journalist by profession, found work as a mailman in the Warsaw ghetto after the war started, and wrote many pieces for the secret archive until he was most likely rounded up in January 1943. Josef Zelkowicz (1897–1944), an ethnographer and professional journalist writing in Yiddish before the war, was deported in 1944 to Auschwitz, where he perished. Samuel D. Kassow is Charles H. Northam Professor of History at Trinity College. David Suchoff is professor of English at Colby College.

Jewish Anti-Assimilationist Sentiment, and Jewish Conduct in the Nazi German-Made Lodz and Warsaw Ghettos

This work features the written works of Peretz Opoczynski (Warsaw ghetto) and Jozef Zelkowicz (Lodz ghetto). Much of the everyday information has been presented before (see the first comment under this review). For this reason, my review devotes considerable attention to the sociology and politics of Poland’s prewar Jews.

NEGATIVISM TOWARDS ACCULTURATED AND ASSIMILATED POLISH JEWS

In his description of the authors, editor Kassow comments, (quote) Before the war, Opoczynski and Zelkowicz were journalists who knew the people they were writing for: the factious, argumentative, opinionated Polish Jews who read the morning Yiddish newspapers…Modern secular Jews loved to hear gossip about Hasidic rebbes; Hasidim avidly read exposes of crafty criminals. Yiddish-speaking Jews devoured biting satires of Polish-speaking Jews (SHMENDRIKES)[SCHMENDRICKS, that is, nobodies] and their shallow pretensions. (unquote). (p. viii). [For an exposition of the contempt of Peretz Opoczynski towards Polish-speaking Jews--as SHMENDRICKS--see p. 42 and p. 93].

Acculturated and assimilated Polish Jews were “too Jewish” for many Poles and “not Jewish enough” for many Jews. Editor Kassow alludes to the fact (as noted by Endeks) that Polish-speaking Jews remained Jews first and “Poles” second, while anti-assimilationist Jews warned that even outward Polonization meant a suicidal loss of essential Jewishness, (quote) While the Polish-language Jewish press showed great sympathy for Zionism, supported the new Hebrew literature in Palestine, and extensively reviewed Yiddish literature and theater, the Yiddish-language sector stubbornly refused to return the favor…The Yiddish writer Yehoshue Perle called them, “MENTSHN ON A MORGN”, people without a future… (unquote). (p. xi). Furthermore, (quote) Opoczynski, more outspoken,…made no secret of his contempt and even hatred of Polish-speaking Jews. (unquote). (p. xii).

NEGATIVISM TOWARDS GENTILES

Peretz Opoczynski of the Warsaw ghetto wrote of a situation where Jewish mail carriers were not acting as uprightly as Christian mail carriers. This prompted the following quoted remark of some angry Jews, “You’re worse than the GOYIM.” (p. 48).

Another derogatory term for gentiles, SHEYGETZ, was also used by Jews. This was reported by Jozef Zelkowicz of the Lodz ghetto. (p. 175, 178).

ATHEISM AND COMMUNISM INTERTWINED WITH THE YIDDISHIST MOVEMENT

Editor Samuel D. Kassow writes, (quote) At some point he [Zelkowicz] joined the militantly secular, Yiddishist, and pro-Soviet Left Poyalei Tsiyon [POALE ZION] party, which also included the noted historians Emanual Ringelblum and Raphael Mahler. The party, which had a particularly strong presence in Lodz, was a staunch supporter of YIVO, and the Central Yiddish School Organization (CYSHO), a network of secular Yiddish schools supported by the Bund. (unquote). (p. xxvi).

GRAVE ROBBERY: NOT ONLY POLES. JEWS ALSO ROBBED THE GRAVES OF JEWS

Neo-Stalinist Jan T. Gross has gotten a lot of media attention through his portrayal of Poles as a dastardly people “out to get the Jews”, animated by (what else?) greed and anti-Semitism. This included lurid accounts of Jewish burial sites looted--presumably by Poles--as in Gross’ GOLDEN HARVEST.

In reality, grave robbery is no “Pole on Jew” thing. It is an unremarkable behavior that respects no nationality, and is common under the brutalizing conditions of war and occupation. Jozef Zelkowicz of the Lodz ghetto describes the funeral of a Jew who had recently died, (quote) He’s wrapped in rags with a rotten board under his back—a rotten piece of wood that will later be stolen to warm a spoonful of soup for someone still alive…Who robbed the Jews of their sense of piety toward the dead, nurtured in their hearts for centuries? (unquote). (p. 164).

JEWISH COLLABORATION WITH THE NAZIS

By way of introduction, the public has learned via JUDENJAGD--the work of neo-Stalinist Jan Grabowski—that some Poles could be induced to turn-in fugitive Jews by rewarding such Poles with a bag of sugar. In another context, Vidkun Quisling had argued that his collaborative actions had alleviated the privations faced by the Norwegians in German-occupied Norway. The alternative--direct German rule over Norway--would only have made things worse.

Very much the same considerations applied to Jewish-Nazi collaboration. For instance, in describing the infamous Jewish ghetto police in the Lodz ghetto, Jozef Zelkowicz said, (quote) The Jewish police were bought. Then they were gotten drunk and given a kind of hashish: their children were exempted from the deportation decree, and they were provided with a kilo and a half of bread per day in exchange for this bloody piece of work, enough bread to eat their fill and an extra ration of sausage and sugar. At the same time, the police were given a rationale to justify their acts: “If our molars are ripped out, our living limbs chopped off, and our bodies cut in two by our own, familiar Jewish hands, perhaps it will not be as painful as the same acts carried out by strangers, with their rough and dirty ones.” (unquote). (p. 239).

Nowadays, Jewish collaboration with the Nazis is commonly excused by the extreme circumstances (while collaboration of others under German occupation (e. g, Poles), in accordance with the double standard, is not). Interestingly, those Jews who actually went through the Holocaust, and know better than anyone else what it is like to be a Jew trying to survive the Nazis, do not so easily let Jewish collaborators off the hook. For instance, Peretz Opoczynski of the Warsaw Ghetto commented, (quote) Someday the role played by the officials of the Jewish Council—spooning everything of value their own way—will be exposed in the harshest light. These were the corrupt civil servants who would obtain an exemption from forced labor for anyone who had enough hard cash, leaving those without any money to be deported in their place. When everything comes to light, it will also be impossible to hide the shameful role played by the Jewish police, which up until now has been completely silenced. (unquote). (p. 95).

SCALE OF DEATH AT THE LODZ GHETTO ITSELF

According to the editor, Samuel D. Kassow, Lodz had the highest “natural” mortality rate of large Jewish ghettos in German-ruled Poland. Fully 21% of its original inhabitants had died from starvation and disease during its existence (1940-1944). (pp. xxix-xxx).

"Uncommon courage was a common virtue": this was said of Marines on another island, Iwo Jima. Texas journalist Sloan's excellent research, interviewing and journalistic prose will have readers of this moving book saying it of Wake Island, too: this popular military history is the best account yet of the Battle for Wake Island in December 1941. An almost barren coral atoll in the Central Pacific, Wake was a link in American communications with the Far East and squarely in the middle of Japanese-held islands. So both sides targeted it in the coming war, and soon after Pearl Harbor the Japanese began steady air attacks on the atoll's garrison. That garrison included a minuscule Marine air arm, flying half-wrecked F4F Wildcats, a thin battalion of Marine infantry and artillery, and a large number of civilian construction workers overtaken by the war while building a base. Battered from the air, this motley group actually drove off the first Japanese attempt at a landing, and inflicted heavy casualties on a second and much stronger effort before surrendering. The Wake Islanders can truly be called "heroic," even if Marine Major Devereaux and Navy Commander Cunningham did not coordinate as well as they could have. The Japanese emerge with little credit for either their witless tactics or their harsh treatment of the prisoners, although a Dr. Ozeki saved the lives of several wounded Americans. Wake Island has nearly faded from memory; the survivors interviewed are fading from life; this book is direly needed on any WW II shelf.

This is the third recently published account about the capture of Wake Island in December 1941 (after Pacific Alamo by John Wukovits [2003] and Hell Wouldn't Stop by Chet Cunningham [2002]), and like its predecessors, the book avails itself of the handful of witnesses to the combat there. Sloan distinguishes himself with a seasoned journalistic approach, emphasizing the personal experience of young marines and civilian construction workers who defeated an initial Japanese attempt to land but succumbed to a second one. The possibility that Wake could have held out has generated conflicting memoirs and naval accounts, which Sloan draws on in his narrative as he recounts the fighting from the perspective of the foxhole. Collectively lauded as heroes at a grim time, when the war was going Japan's way, the marines are ably individualized by Sloan in ground-pounding dramatization of the gory action at every gun position. The last-stand courage of Wake's warriors continues to draw readers of military history. Gilbert Taylor

Wake Islands Heroic Stand

First, I was only nine years old when the attack on Pear Harbor and subsequent battle for Wake Island took place. I remember our father coming to the bed room and telling my older brother and myself that we were at war with Japan. At that time I hadn't even heard the name Pearl Harbor. Thought it was in San Francisco Bay. When naming the battleships which are named for states it kinda of added to the confusion. My folks, like everyone else in North America at the time were glued to the radio and the battle for Wake Island was very much in the news. Several months later a movie came out on the battle of Wake Island which I saw and left everyone with the impression their were no survivors. As an adult I read many articles on the Battle of Wake.Bill Sloan's book is probably the most detailed and informative which also cleared up a lot of misinformation documented by other writers.

Why don't we know more about this heroic struggle?

Bill Sloan accomplishes for me everything he set out to do--which is to give the reader a close-up, on-the-ground view of what it must have been like to endure the siege and the aftermath of this little-known struggle that represented the first face-to-face combat between the Japanese soldier and the American Marine. The endurance of these men is an everlasting tribute to both the Marine Corps and to the American spirit. And similar to what one finds when reading "Ghost Soldiers" or "Flag of our Fathers", one sees here the corruption of the bushido code by the Japanese military and the horrific consequences of this corruption--to both the Japanese foot soldier and later to US POW's. Credit to author Sloan for presenting a moving and enduring tribute to the brave men on both sides. And some welcome contrast to the conventional wisdom by restoring the reputation of that benighted scapegoat, Admiral Kimmel. How about a few more belated medals to these men who were every bit as courageous and effective in the performance of their duty as Alvin York and Audie Murphy.

Mr Sloan gives a good account of a sadly unknown battle to many generations. The defenders of Wake set the tone for the rest of the Pacific campaign. The Imperial Empire found out that maybe they did not have the divine right to expansion and that the Americans were not the spoiled, lazy children of priveledge that they expected. While a great triumph for the men who fought there, Wake is, in my opinion a blemish on the US forces for essentially hanging them out to dry. Despite Kimmel's errors at Pearl Harbor, I do have to give him credit for at least trying to help out these abandoned men before his successor, in his infinite lack of "determinism", managed to FUBAR the whole mission and leave these US Soldiers and civilians out to dry. Disgraceful!
