All of these texts are based on new Arabic editions. Two of the texts—Book of Religion and Harmonization of the Two Opinions of the Two Sages: Plato the Divine and Aristotle—appear in English for the first time. The translations of the other two works—Selected Aphorisms and chapter five of the Enumeration of the Sciences—differ markedly from those previously known to English-language readers.

Butterworth situates each essay in its historical, literary, and philosophical context. His notes help the reader follow Alfarabi's text and identify persons, places, and events. English-Arabic and Arabic-English glossaries of terms further assist the reader.

About the Author
Thomas L. Pangle holds the Joe R. Long Chair in Democratic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. His many acclaimed publications include The Ennobling of Democracy: The Challenge of the Postmodern Age and Political Philosophy and the God of Abraham, both published by Johns Hopkins. He has also published a number of translations of Platonic dialogues, including The Laws of Plato and The Roots of Political Philosophy: Ten Forgotten Socratic Dialogues.

Charles E. Butterworth is Emeritus Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland. He is the author or translator of many books, including The Political Writings: "Selected Aphorisms" and Other Texts by Alfarabi, also from Cornell.

Alfarabi has a lot to say in this book. You can spend days analyzing brief passages, but getting to the core of what Farabi is saying is no easy task. Perhaps the greatest success of this book is just getting its reader to really think and putting him in a state of wonder.

With the decline of violent activity on both extremes of the political spectrum in the early 1980s, the theory and practice so comprehensively discussed by Ferraresi seemed to have entered a dormant stage. Ferraresi, however, places in context the recent resurgence of neo-fascist forces in Italy, and of the so-called New Right throughout Europe, together with the rise of fundamentalism in many parts of the world.

The ten (10) chapters of Bill Orr's text start with the basics of feedlines, ground loss and antenna height, and move through wire antennas, multiband dipoles, loops, 160mtr antennas, tuners, construction projects and related analysis. As a licensed amateur radio operator interested in the HF band, this is the SECOND book I would buy - the ARRL Antenna Book (18th Edition) is the first.
