About the Author
Before he jumped into the world of woodworking, he served in the Royal Canadian Army for 14 years in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. After leaving the RCA on a honorable discharge, he studied furniture design/making at Rosewood Studio and learned from some of the best in the business, including Garrett Hack and Chris Schwarz. After finishing up his studies, Vic owned his own studio while working part-time at Rosewood as an instructor and craftsman in residence before eventually becoming an editor at Canadian Woodworking magazine. Vic now has what might be one of the coolest jobs in woodworking: he serves as Technical Advisor at Lee Valley Tools. He also builds what he wants, when he wants in his minimalist workshop. Title is misleading in a way. But, some useful information along with 5 workshop projects

Depending upon one's expectations, the book's title may be misleading. I'm a moderately experienced worker of wood but I'm certainly not an expert or master. And, I firmly believe that everyone can always learn something new every day. I know that I do. Consider that Chapter 1 begins on page #11 and Chapter 4 ends on page #59. Pages #61 thru #91 inclusive show how to build a saw bench and bent, step-by-step. The remaining pages, up to page #145 are dedicated to step-by-step plans for building - with a reasonably minimal number of hand tools - four other workshop-related projects: shooting board hook, wooden mallet, workbench and hand tool shelf. So, aside from the excellent photos detailing the five projects, the photos and actual information about the tools themselves is very basic and broad and many times it's predicated upon a "nice to have".

As an example, the author mentions the various types of hand planes and their uses in the shop. Photos of each are included. However, several of the types of planes (jointer as one) he mentions are not big box store or home center items and are indeed quite expensive to buy new in good quality. The better-quality used vintage ones are highly sought after as well and are surely not being given away for a song. So, "minimalist" could very well be dependent upon one's budget combined with a willingness to scour flea markets, online listings and estate and garage sales, much more so than physical shop space and what's readily available and affordable. That's what may be misleading.

Yes, there is definitely some very useful information in this book so I absolutely do not consider it as money poorly spent. E.g. the pictorial demonstration on making a saw groove is a nifty one as is the discussion of the "cabinetmaker's triangle". But, if as I did, you are thinking of "minimalist" - as it used in this book - as somehow being similar to the minimalist hand tools and woodworking techniques and disciplines embraced by say Japanese craftsmen, you would be incorrect. The five projects illustrated in the book are very nice but they are not high quality, finished pieces. They are dedicated for use in the workshop and yes, the author used mostly hand tools to make them. But, getting from those five projects to higher quality and more finished works with those same hand tools is not discussed in this book.

You Can Learn More From Paul Sellers' Free Videos

This book was not useful for me, and I returned it. I respect what the author has attempted to do in writing it and appreciate his publishing a book that aims to popularize woodworking. However this volume attempts to cover too much in too little space, and thus can't go much into depth on anything. Much of the book is taken up with some simple projects. There are lots of photos, which are nicely done, but don't leave room for as much text as I would have hoped for. Statements are made about what hand tools are necessary for woodworking, but little is actually said in detail about why the tools listed here are needed, or what makes them important vs other options, how to choose them, where to buy them, or what to look for in the comparing various models and features available. I would have liked to see much more comprehensive detail in this area. I learned a lot more than is covered in this book simply by browsing Paul Sellers free videos on the web.

Instead of -- or in addition to -- this book, please consider "The Anarchist's Tool Chest" by Christopher Schwarz, for a truly comprehensive, minimalist list of hand tools you really need to do good woodworking, and the comprehensive reasons why these specific tools were selected. Also consider "The Essential Woodworker" by Robert Wearing for an excellent introduction to woodworking for those with little or no experience.

Simple and thoughtful

The best word to describe this is simple, in the best sense of the word. Simple means you get back to the fundamentals of woodworking that involve hand-eye coordination, muscle, and a limited set of proper tools that have worked for hundreds of years. Simple lets your focus and think clearly about what you're doing. Plus, you get to make a mallet. You can't beat that. This is a great entry point or a guide to having a simplified season of woodworking.

The Believer, a film written and directed by Henry Bean about Danny Balint an orthodox Jew who becomes a neo-Nazi, won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2001 Sundance film festival. He was desperately hiding something and compulsively trying to bring it out at the same time. People are drawn to contradiction. He undergoes a conversion, but not back to the Torah." By telling the story of the Jewish Nazi, Bean concluded, "I began to understand what Judaism was."

When Danny Balint gets a call from a New York Times reporter, he gives an eloquent articulation of anti-Semitism. Judaism "is a sickness. . . . The real Jew is a nomad and a wanderer. He has no roots and no attachments. He universalizes everything. All he can do is buy and sell and manipulate markets. It’s all mental. Marx, Freud, Einstein: what have they given us? Communism, infantile sexuality and the atom bomb. They want nothing but nothingness, nothing without end."

The main issue in The Believer is theological. Danny Balint penetrates to the heart of the Jewish religion by understanding that the Jew worships Nothingness. If Hitler is the chief Nihilist of the 20th century, then he is the chief rabbi of the religion that worships "nothing but nothingness, nothing without end." He attained that position by default when the Catholic Church stopped working for the conversion of the Jews.

Fascinating and provocative

This is not a book about Jews who joined the National Socialist movement. Rather, it is a theological and philophical essay which examines cases of Jewish self-loathing and nihilism, the causes of them and what might be the solution. Along the way the Catholic cultural critic E. Michael Jones critiques the evolutionary psychology of Kevin MacDonald, an academic who has written widely on Jewish intellecutal movements. Readers will also learn about the writings of Georg Ratzinger (relative of the present Pope) and his take on 'the Jewish question'.
Despite what some may fear this is a humane work aiming to understand the causes of a particular form of nihilism and ultimately proposing a solution that rejects racism and takes theological truth seriously. It's very well written and there is all sorts of fascinating biographical detail concerning some heroic and tragic figures. Strongly recommended.

Despite being somewhat repetitive it was a good exploration of more Modern Jewish Nazis, although, it would have been more interesting to delve deeper into Jewish involvement in the Third Reich.

G.K. Chesterton once said: "the new Nordic Man has all the worst faults of the worst Jews: jealousy, greed, the mania of conspiracy, and above all, the belief in a Chosen Race," to which a biographer Simon Mayers had to apologize for as an official Jewish absolver of Christian guilt. Chesterton was funny, being a wit requires you to understand the irony of the human condition and the paradoxical nature of flawed psychologies--the type that generates Jewish Nazis or NATO terrorists for instance.

Jones follows in Chesterton's footsteps at recognizing the humorous paradoxical thinking of Gay Catholic Apostolate Leaders eating gourmet cake on a Lenten cruise, or of course Jewish Nazis trying to find meaning by proving there is none, but rather than wit Jones gives a perspective in the style of a psychologist and historian, citing heartily from both genera of sources.

About the Author

Ricardo F. Crespo is Professor of Philosophy of Economics at IAE Business School, Universidad Austral, Argentina. He holds BA degrees in Economics and in Philosophy, as well as a doctorate in Philosophy (Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina) and a PhD in Economics (Universiteit van Amsterdam). He teaches Philosophy of Economics at IAE Business School and at Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. Professor Crespo is a researcher at Argentina’s National Council of Scientific Research (CONICET) and has published numerous books, articles and papers in his field. His recent publications include articles in the Cambridge Journal of Economics, Journal of Economic Methodology, Foundations of Science, Journal of Applied Economics, Review of Social Economy and Synthese.
