Huh?

I did not understand this book. Too much going on....from the first chapter I didnt get the gist...the plot. Too many characters. This book is very confusing. I stopped at Chapter 4. I tried. Refund please. I usually love HP but this is the first negative review Ivev written. The political activism family history was odd. Im upset I cant get through this book. Very frustrating.

a different look at love

This is definitely a different type of romance. Sure, Monroe works in the will they-won’t they aspect that keeps you wondering, along with a plethora of issues that could keep the characters apart, but it is in those issues that we find the differences. Monroe captures emotions very well throughout this novel. She also mixes in heat, sass, and a great deal of reality to create a story that left me intrigued.

Monroe’s characters in this one may be from the top 1% of society and living the lives that the rest of us don’t even dare to dream of, but that doesn’t mean that readers can’t connect with them. The author’s in depth development make them seem very real and human. Once you understand where they come from, their stories are easy to get in to. Now, that’s not to say that they’re just like you and I. Readers can definitely see and feel the fortunes rolling off of these characters, making our everyday worries infinitely different from theirs.

As a whole, this was an intriguing novel that I enjoyed. It was a quick, sassy read great for when you want something light.

A virgin For His Prize - Unfortunately Dull

It’s not like I’m not familiar with Lucy Monroe’s books. In fact I enjoy her stories and have been reading her on and off for a while.

Unfortunately Virgin For His Prize, second book in her Ruthless Russians Series, just did not stimulate my juices as much as her earlier books. Maxwell Black is a wealthy Russian, hell bent on possessing the society heiress Romi Grayson. Not believing in happily ever-after, love or long term relationships, he goes about trying the get Romi via blackmail. Romi is extremely attracted to Black and has already made up her mind to accept the proposal despite, Black not declaring his love for her.

There is too much dialogue and less substance in the story. It’s not like I’m averse to dialogue, but they have to be witty, interesting and hold attention to make it a good read. The characters lacked depth, as well as chemistry. Lots of time it felt like I was reading a monologue. Sorry! The premise of the story had great potential; unfortunately it lacked the conviction to harness that story line.

I haven’t read the first book An Heiress For His Empire, which I plan on giving it a shot anyways despite this book not making it happen for me, because Monroe is a good writer and I will go back to her books.

The book documents how acoustic effects—reverberation, room ambience, and echo—have been used in recordings since the 1920s to create virtual sonic architectures and landscapes. Author Peter Doyle traces the development of these acoustically-created worlds from the ancient Greek myth of Echo and Narcissus to the dramatic acoustic architectures of the medieval cathedral, the grand concert halls of the 19th century, and those created by the humble parlor phonograph of the early 20th century, and finally, the revolutionary age of rock ’n’ roll.

Citing recordings ranging from Gene Austin’s ‘My Blue Heaven’ to Elvis Presley’s ‘Mystery Train,’ Doyle illustrates how non-musical sound constructs, with all their rich and contradictory baggage, became a central feature of recorded music. The book traces various imagined worlds created with synthetic echo and reverb—the heroic landscapes of the cowboy west, the twilight shores of south sea islands, the uncanny alleys of dark cityscapes, the weird mindspaces of horror movies, the private and collective spaces of teen experience, and the funky juke-joints of the mind.

Ignore the jazzhermit, this book is a winner!

I was prompted to write this response due to "jazzhermit"'s completely ill-considered, ill-informed and, quite frankly, loony "review" of this fantastic book. Echo and Reverb is one of the best books on a relationship between sound technology and social history one would ever hope to find. In short, Doyle provides a complete history of the sonic treatment of sound in the recording studio, including the emergence of acoustic effects, notable examples from recording history and ultimately the psycho-acoustic ramifications of sound processing in the recording studio, by way of some of the best-known pre and early rock'n'roll records.

After having read this book, I was prompted to do further research, and thanks to Wikipedia, I am now aware that Peter Doyle is a critically acclaimed academic AND fiction writer, which would seem to make sense, as the style is fluid and accessible and not simply some overly verbose academic treatise. In fact the book was the recipient of an "Association of Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) 2006 award for Best Research in Record Labels and General History", so I would take that as a more appropriate indicator of its erudition and quality.

Furthermore, as a music lover and historian, I am a self-confessed taskmaster when it comes to historical data and trajectory. This book never sets a foot wrong, providing an absolutely comprehensive discussion of recording techniques, and the studios in which these new sonic innovations (Sun, Chess et al) took place.

Why the previous reviewer would have such problems with the book is beyond me, as it is one of the finest elaborations on the emergence of effects/audio treatments and the records that drove these innovations that one could ever purchase.

Echo and reverb: Much more than just cool sounds

Echo and reverb - together with tremolo, arguably the coolest effects ever conceived in audio. Some of us wierdos could listen to them all day. But beyond groovy tonality, there is a much deeper historical and cultural import in these atmospheric sounds which dates back to the proverbial Age of Antiquity. Doyle identifies this history and social meaning in a rigorous and yet endearingly poetic manner that commences with masculine (reverb) and feminine (echoic) implications of each effect and follows a thorough trajectory until the onset of stereo in the late `50s. For any audiophiles grappling with the issues of accuracy vs musicality, you'll be pleased to know that these quasi-religious debates were happening as long ago as the 1920's (realist vs romanticist) with echo/reverb clearly being identified with the latter which in turn is clearly identified with the personal liberation of the outsider and the underclass.

Doyle is great writer - very articulate, poetic and a true fan of this stuff. I recommend this book to enthusiasts of the original blues and rockabilly era as well as audio nuts.

File this one next to yer copies of Colin Escott and Peter Guralnick. A fine read.
